Is it possible to jump from engineering to ER without industry experience?
About to graduate from Aerospace engineering(Undergrad) this year but I have no interest in engineering work anymore. All the stuff I used to get excited about turned out to be pretty mundane after observing my fellow seniors working from home. Stumbled upon ER and got interested in it. So, I've been doing some online courses to understand the basic stuff(Accounting fundamentals and reading Financial Statements).
I've had 4 months of contract job dealing with Airline transport pilot licence but thats about it.
Was wondering if I should seriously put effort on this now or just get couple of years of industry experience and then jump(or stay)?
My CGPA is not stellar(4.1/5) and I'm from top 3 technical university in Poland.
Hi!
Well I can relate with you. I studied chemical engineering and now working as an associate in ER. It’s possible to make it as long as you show initiative to learn.
I’d advise you carry on doing the online certificates and start a free trading account which will help you to start looking and investing in stocks.
I’d also recommend you read company financial statements and try to understand each and every line of that document. In addition, start building your own models.
Short answer, yes, it’s almost impossible to jump without industry experience into ER if you’re not coming from undergrad. Natural position for you would be a Euro airspace & defense team but they’d be looking for someone already at an industry player in a finance/strategic role. Just learning how to read financial statements doesn’t add too much to the table as anyone can do that. Coming from industry gives an edge - if you’re an aerospace engineer, figure out a way to create that edge then try to get into ER.
