Is there such a thing as too much time in industry?

So my plan is to gain industry experience in energy sector, and use that to apply for positions as an energy associate. Fair enough, lots of people do that, etc etc. I'm just wondering if there's maybe a time limit to how long I should do that? I'm currently a business analyst for a large oil company (almost 1 year), so I'm gaining very good experience on that sector, but I don't want to stay here so long that ER's start skipping my applications because I've been in industry too long. Is this a potential problem/should I worry about "stigmatizing" myself as an industry man?

Nah I really doubt I'll do the MBA route. Currently my plan is to do 2 years jumping around a couple upstream oil companies in business analyst type roles, and try to lateral in as you say. From people I've talked to ER is about the only financial career that industry experience is equally as valuable as an MBA. Any thoughts on that?
