Kennedy Capital Management

Hi:

I am a first year MBA student at Olin Business School (Wash U, St.Louis). I have a yearlong internship at St. Louis-based Kennedy Capital Management, a buy-side firm focused on small and mid cap equities. My internship involves assisting analysts and portfolio managers in equity research and performing various "administrative" duties. Now I heard that this internship is mostly attracts undergrads. Since I am a career changer for IT to Finance, I do not have many other decent options in Equity research/Asset Management but I do have a corporate finance position at a top IT company. Given that, my aim after my MBA (May 2011) is to work at buy side firms (Equity research/Asset Management) in NYC, how would you rate Kennedy's internship opportunity (or) should I take the other corporate finance position which is really paying well (an MBA pay)? Is it time well spent? Inputs please?

Thanks

I agree. Its relevant experience that you should be able to leverage for full time recruiting. Besides working your ass of the get the FT offer, you should also start re-networking and finding more connections if you want to move to another shop. Alumni who did not respond to your emails the first time will probably give you a second look now that you have some experience. Your a career changer who has a solid FO internship, you should be very happy/proud of yourself. You may have to start at this MM fund to begin with, but if you really work hard you will be able to move around later on in your career. I suggest you look at all the BB, but focus on other MM funds that are in NYC since they will probably value your experience a little more than the BB. Since you are getting this experience, seriously look into re-networking alumni and also look into networking with people from your undergrad. I think Ari Gold says it best...." It's like High School Eric, you can't fuck the prom queen until she finds out her best friend jerked you under the bleachers."

"Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, for knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind. And greed, you mark my words, will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA."

I say it's definitely worth the opportunity. We talk to these guys all the time and they're a pretty decent small/mid-cap shop. The one guy that I met there was an extremely bright guy. You'll definitely dive into fundamental analysis at its finest at this firm. It'll be a great chance to get great experience if you're interested in equity research/asset management as a long-term career.
