Need some advice on switching from prop trading (4 years) to equity research
I graduated from a respected undergrad with a Finance degree and took a job as a prop equity trader with a goal of learning as much as I can to make myself a successful trader and investor. I traded at two different trading firms for about the last 4 years and realized that day trading’s profitability was capped due to liquidity issues, swing trading was always exposed to risks greater than I initially anticipated due to possible overnight news, and the mental strain of making multiple trading decisions and having large swings in my P&L in a day was taking a toll on my body.
Now that I’ve learned how to trade using technical analysis and am somewhat confident in my ability to consistently make profit trading technically, I feel the need to diversify my income sources by being in a career that doesn’t revolve around looking at a chart tick by tick. Learning to invest at a slower pace with less risk like value investing or real estate is what I want as the next step in my career, but I am unclear on how to approach looking for a position in the industry since I don’t have any corporate finance experience.
What kind of position would help me learn more about how smart money approach investing? What qualities can I work on to land an entry level job as a guy 4 years out of college without a really relevant corporate experience? How would you guys approach this situation if you were in my shoes? Any advice that you guys can give me would be really appreciated. Thank you!
