Non-finance major from non-target trying to break into ER
Hello...I study kinesiology (exercise science) at a great school, but non-target, in the United States. Midway through my college career, I fell in love with investing and realized my major was a massive waste of money. I've always had a love for research and problem-solving and wanted a career that kept me on my toes (hence my interest in equity research). I also spend much of my free time researching for my own portfolio, and through my own studies, I have gotten pretty solid at modeling (I definitely still have room to improve).
Obviously, it's going to take a lot of extra effort for me to break in. I have a 3.3 GPA and 690 GMAT (confident I can get it up to at least a 720), founded my own company, have had a few finance internships, including a summer analyst VC internship, and was thinking of getting my MSF. I've heard doing so is a huge waste of money unless it's at a renowned school, and my grades may not be enough to get me in.
With all that said, does anyone have suggestions on potential avenues I can take to break into ER? All perspectives welcome, including tough love. I'm extremely hard-working and will do anything, even if that means getting a non-investment-related banking job, consulting, networking my ass off, or getting extra schooling.
P.S. as for networking, what are the best ways to reach out? I've always done LinkedIn but have found that a lot of people never use it. Also, there's a limit on how many non-connections I can send a message to.
