NYSSA Investment Research Challenge

I wanted to know what people thought of the NYSSA Investment Research Challenge. I would like to participate in it in the future and was wondering what skills/knowledge are necessary to excel in such a competition and in equity research in general.

Thanks for the response. Tell me everything. If you could give me a brief summary of what you went through, that would be great.

  1. When does it start and end?
  2. What kind of seminars do you attend during the six months? Also, how many?
  3. What skills/knowledge are necessary to excel in such a competition or any equity research challenge?
  4. Did you feel as if you gained a lot of knowledge/was it a good experience?

It would be great if others could post on this topic, I haven't found much on NYSSA on WSO.

  1. A detailed time line can be found here: (Sept of Year 1 to April of Year 2) http://www.box.net/shared/2g0ndrdvqh

  2. Don't expect much on the seminars. It's more of the data service providers doing their marketing pitch. You won't be learning much. Spend time learning it yourself. You should be very familiar with finding data, downloading them and how to stream them to excel pretty quickly. I mean really really quickly. You don't need to know all of them, just pick one data service provider and learn really well. A few of the data service providers that bankers use are Capital IQ, Factset, Bloomberg, EdgarOnline and etc. They are also listed on that box file.

  3. 50% Good Business Writing Skills. 30% Team Management Skills. 10% Analytical Skills. 10% Financial Modeling Skills.

  4. I learned more than I did at school especially how to write effectively as a research analyst.

My best advice to you is don't think too much. Focus on the starting point which is to get onto your school team. Get to know the faculty advisor at your school really well and start establishing good rapport with him or her.

If you needed more info, let me know. Best of luck to you.
