Preparing a buyside stock pitch for an interview

I’ve been lined up for 2 interviews at buyside boutiques and preparing for stock pitches/ ideas.. can someone tell me how long the report should be and the details should I add to the pitch.. my research is a long only pitch with sector, industry, company and financial analysis along with valuations, how detailed should be these sections be, also should I add the price chart and denote key events over the past 3-5 years. Should I add assumptions of the dcf with different scenarios, should this be a 10 pagers or limit it to 2-3 pages.
Also can some share buyside equity research templates or reports for reference
Can please someone jump in and add their 2 cents on this
Thanks

Ahoy there! Preparing for a buy-side stock pitch is like setting sail on the high finance seas, and I'm here to make sure you navigate these waters like a seasoned captain. Let's dive into the treasure trove of information to ensure your pitch is shipshape.

Length of the Report

  • General Guidance: The length of your written pitch should ideally be one to two pages. It's like packing for a treasure hunt; you want to be efficient and only carry what you need. However, if your analysis is as deep as the ocean and you feel the need to go over, make sure every page is worth its weight in gold.
  • For Interviews: Some say a 2-page report will suffice, and there's truth to that. Yet, the real value lies in the content. If a shop takes the time to read your report and ask targeted questions, you know you've found a place that values the depth of your analysis.

Details to Include in Your Pitch

  1. Sector, Industry, and Company Analysis: Provide a concise overview, focusing on the key elements that make your chosen stock stand out. Think of it as charting the map to the treasure; you want to highlight the landmarks (key drivers) without cluttering the map.
  2. Financial Analysis and Valuations: Include a summary of financial health and valuation metrics. This is your compass; it should point to why the stock is a good investment.
  3. Price Chart and Key Events: Adding a price chart with annotated key events over the past 3-5 years can be incredibly insightful. It's like showing the path the ship has taken, with notes on storms weathered or favorable winds.
  4. DCF Assumptions and Scenarios: Including assumptions of your DCF with different scenarios is a great idea. It shows you're prepared for rough seas and changing tides. However, keep it concise. You're sketching possible routes, not charting every possible course the journey could take.

Templates and Reports for Reference

While I can't hand you a ready-made map (template or report), the key is to ensure your pitch covers all bases effectively. Think of it as crafting your own map to the treasure. The guidelines provided here, drawn from the wisdom of seasoned sailors on Wall Street Oasis, should serve as your compass.

Final Pieces of Advice

  • Customize Your Pitch: Tailor it to the place you're applying to. If they're long-only, make sure your pitch reflects a deep understanding of what makes a compelling long investment.
  • Be Prepared to Discuss: Know your pitch inside and out, as if you're ready to navigate through a storm with it. Be ready to defend your thesis and discuss any concerns or questions the interviewer may have.

Remember, the goal is not just to find the treasure but to convince others to embark on the journey with you. Your pitch is your call to adventure, so make it as compelling as a call to the high seas. Good luck, and may the wind be always at your back!
