Private Banking vs. Equity Research

I was wondering how private banking and equity research divisions are related and how their pay and work/life balances differ. Also which would be a better starting position for a strong career? Are they similar in regards to competition for positions? Approaching my sophomore year and I am trying to find the best fit for me, any input would be appreciated
