Replying to recruiter a week late…
I am probably overthinking this, but I could really use some reassurance.
I have been trying to break into equity research and finally heard back from a recruiter who asked a few screening questions over email and then said they would like to move me forward to a modeling and write up assessment. Unfortunately, I was out of town and did not see the email until earlier this week since I was not checking my inbox regularly.
As soon as I saw it, I replied and said I would love to proceed with the process, but now I am worried that I may have responded too late.
This is my first real ER ding, so I am pretty excited about the opportunity and probably reading into it more than I should. Has anyone been in a similar situation? Is a short delay in replying usually a big deal for these types of assessments?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, a short delay in replying to a recruiter is not necessarily a dealbreaker, especially if you’ve communicated promptly once you noticed the email. Recruiters and hiring managers understand that candidates may occasionally miss emails due to travel or other commitments. The key is to remain professional and enthusiastic in your response, which it sounds like you’ve done.
Here are a few points to consider:
Timeliness Matters, But Context Helps: While being prompt is ideal, a one-week delay is not catastrophic, especially if you’ve explained your situation and expressed strong interest in the opportunity.
Recruiter’s Perspective: Recruiters are often juggling multiple candidates and timelines. If they were truly pressed for time or had moved on, they likely would have informed you or closed the loop. The fact that they haven’t suggests there’s still a chance.
Next Steps: Since you’ve already replied, focus on preparing for the modeling and write-up assessment. Demonstrating your skills and enthusiasm during this stage can outweigh any initial delay.
Lessons for the Future: To avoid similar situations, consider setting up email alerts or checking your inbox more frequently during active recruiting periods.
Stay positive and focus on nailing the assessment! Many WSO users have shared that recruiters are more forgiving than candidates often assume, especially when the delay is reasonable and the candidate shows genuine interest. Good luck!
