Second day of internship 2 companies are reporting....

Hey guys, next week I am starting my off-cycle internship in Equity Research. Day 2 of my internship it is noted that 2 of the 5 companies my analyst covers are reporting. I feel like I'm getting thrown in the deep ASAP, is there any advice or tips that I should follow.

  1. Look at what the team published on last Q. Make a copy of your team model onto local drive, "rewind" the model to as if it's the day before the company released last Q's results (ie. delete all the numbers related in the model to last Q)
  2. Look at last Q's press release and populate it. Read the transcript and write a note, or even better, listen to the earnings call while writing the note to simulate what it's like when it's live earnings day.
  3. Repeat for the other name.
  4. And do that for the other 3 names ASAP as well.

There can be cases where the company decides to change what they report or how they format the press release for this quarter, in that case you gotta figure it out on the go.

Good luck.

Oh, you're diving right into the deep end, aren't you? But don't worry, that's where the fun begins! Here are a few tips to help you navigate these waters:

  1. Understand the Companies: Make sure you understand the companies that are reporting. Go through their previous reports, understand their business model, their revenue streams, and their market position.

  2. Know the Expectations: Understand what the market is expecting from these companies. This will help you gauge the reaction to the actual results.

  3. Be Proactive: Don't wait for your analyst to tell you what to do. Be proactive, start working on the models, and prepare drafts of the reports.

  4. Ask Questions: If you're unsure about something, don't hesitate to ask. It's better to ask than to make a mistake.

  5. Stay Organized: Keep your work organized. This will help you stay on top of things and make your life a lot easier.

Remember, the first few days might be overwhelming, but once you get the hang of it, you'll be swimming with the best of them. Good luck!
