Q&A: Sharing my move from MM ER associate to BB IB analyst

Hey guys,

I am in my 2nd year of ER as an RA and picked up my own coverage. However, I have made a move from MM ER to IB at a BB, wanted to share my experience here to anyone who might be looking at a similar move. AMA!

1. Why did you transfer into another bank instead of an internal transfer to IB within your own bank?

2. How difficult was it it get an interview in IB coming from ER? Was it hard to get noticed? Did you go through a standard application, or did you have contacts at the BB that helped to facilitate the interview process.

3. Once you transferred over, did you have to start as a bottom tier analyst, or were you considered an experienced hire?

Sorry for all the questions, but I am very interested in your experience. I have been in ER for about 1.5 years and am realizing that this career field is not for me. I also have 3 years of prior experience in a Big 4 valuations group, and I am looking to make a move to IB, but I don't enjoy my MM firm (goes beyond just ER management), and would like to ideally switch frims if I make the move.
