Should I ask for a reference?
A little background. Super non-target school. Have been networking for a while now, but there is really only one alumni from my school who works in the area of my interest which is Equity Research. We have communicated with him several times before so I can say he knows me. He was also our team industry advisor for one of the student competitions.
So, that said, just got out of a call with him. I think it went great, I generally asked good, prepared in advance questions, and overall conversation flow was good, and it felt natural. Call went on for around 40 minutes and he had another call to hop on so we didn't finish. He said that we can continue on a different day.
I have really enjoyed talking to him and learned a lot.
He is an MD at an EB and the recruiting process in his firm ends very soon. Although I have several other leads, I do not have any other leads in a good firm. Should I ask him for a reference now?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, it’s great that you’ve built a solid rapport with this alumnus, especially given your non-target background. However, timing is key when asking for a reference. Since the call went well and he’s open to continuing the conversation, it’s better to wait until the next interaction to ask for a reference. This allows you to further solidify the relationship and avoid coming across as too forward.
When you do ask, frame it tactfully. For example, after expressing gratitude for his guidance, you could say something like, “I really appreciate all the insights you’ve shared and the time you’ve taken to help me. I noticed the recruiting process at your firm is wrapping up soon, and I was wondering if you might feel comfortable recommending me or pointing me in the right direction for the opportunity.” This approach is polite, shows respect for his position, and gives him the option to decline without feeling pressured.
Also, remember to always end your conversations with, “Is there anyone else you recommend I speak to?” This keeps the networking chain alive and could lead to additional opportunities. Good luck!

Why wouldn’t you ask for a reference is the better question? If you want anything you have to ask for it, they were likely in your spot at some point in the past at well.
Seems like you have nothing to lose
I want to make sure he doesn’t think I reached out just for a reference. I genuinely value the conversation and am sincerely interested in speaking with him.
