Starting market report in school.

Hi guys,

I'm starting a market report in my school and I'm trying to find advice and tips on how I should go about this. I tried it out last year but it didn't really work out too well but I learned a lot about what I could have done better.

So, what recommendations do you guys have for going about this?

Yeah sorry, that is vague. Well, I'm still considering what markets to cover. Thinking commodities / equities (European and American large cap) and Gold / crude just because these are the easiest to find information on.

In terms of report, I'm looking at creating research papers that will analyse trends and allow the people working on it issue their prediction on where it will be going in the near term.

That's all I have really.

Does your school have a bloomberg terminal that you can use for data?

looking for that pick-me-up to power through an all-nighter?

So its a macro report on the entire market? It may be more educational / interesting to just pick a large cap company and do a deep dive on that company, what they do, risks, what the state of their industry looks like and their role in it, etc. Then create some pro formas based on that. I only say this because you may be biting off more than you can chew trying to report on the current state of the S&P / Russell 1000 etc.

You could do something on how commodity markets relate to equity markets. What happens to mining stocks when gold spikes? How do consumer stocks react when crude dips? Do equities typically rise and fall with oil prices?

The data should be fairly easy to get on that stuff & really there are no right or wrong answers. It all depends on the situation.. and with the present action in commodities & turmoil in equities it should be pretty easy to find plenty of articles on how commodities are affecting everything. Read some articles on seekingalpha, bloomberg, etc and you'll get the idea.

Right now I'm doing what you're planning to. I researching 2 companies, one in the sugar and one in the oil industry. I think I'm going to do a third but in the oil industry as well. I find the oil industry interesting and there's a lot of companies and info to find.. But I must say, if you want to do it correctly (i'm using this website http://equity-research.com/stock-analysis-checklist/ as a guideline) you'll be busy for quite a while. There are plenty of websites out there where you can find data, news, ratio's, data on management and so on. Good luck!
