Switching Industries on the sell side?

At an up and coming MM bank, how hard is it switching industrys in equity research at the associate level? (This is assuming there are openings in the other positions.) My background is in financial services, and though I am perhaps best qualified for FS equity research, I am ultimately interested in the energy industry. How plausible would a switch be at the associate level? Possible after 1, 2, or 3 years?
