Telecoms and Media

Just started ER and have an opportunity to go into Telcos or Media (European coverage). The Telco team is quite highly ranked whereas Media has a decent gaming coverage. I think both are pretty interesting (slight interest more towards gaming) but Telcos is higher rated. What do you all think here, go for interest or rating? I understand Telcos is slightly more complicated in terms of modelling but there is a risk of being pigeonholed for buyside recruitment.

In my opinion telcos doesn’t pidgeon hole you nearly as bad as the usual suspects like banks/insurance does. Yes you have some specialised knowledge that doesn’t apply elsewhere but I think people are aware the space is technically demanding, so you should be able to argue to whoever you can lean on the technical skills you’ve developed if you want to pursue a sector move later on. Maybe someone else could chime in here.

On ranking depends what the gap is. If telco is #2 in II and media is #3 or something tiny, don’t nitpick and just go with media if that’s what you prefer. If we’re talking #1 vs #10 then yes maybe it’s worth the career boost to do telcos. Gaming is nice but there are only 3 or so big european gaming stocks so if you do media be sure you also like the other parts of the coverage.

Telecom are "service providers" and some aspects you learn can be applied to other services like energy, data, oil, and in the future EVs as a service, etc

I think it is very useful knowledge. The stuff I learned in banking is interesting for... banking, but not always elsewhere.
