Thoughts on a potential job

I am happy to elaborate on the following if anyone is kind enough to offer good advice.

I am a rising senior at a reputable, but non-target state school. I am a fairly strong student (above 3.5) with a full-time offer from a financial services company (provider of an ubiquitous terminal). I have also interned at a hedge fund (ER), AM firm, and do side projects for a boutique brokerage on the street.

While I am grateful to have an offer, I would like to end up in PM, as I have a strong research background and enjoy investing on my own. The offer is for data-oriented role, and I fear that the experience will not carry much weight when I want to make a switch. I'd normally follow my ambitions, but given the exceptionally challenged hiring environment, I am curious about what others think of my situation.

I have networked with great vigor, and gotten my resume out there. While people acknowledge my abilities, and have claimed to be impressed by my resume, I still face the sobering reality that no one has extended me so much as an interview for full-time research position (I hope to begin a career in ER - buy side or sell side). I have a month to decide on my offer. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Well if you have a month, sounds like you have a month to continue rigorous networking and possible interviewing. You won't have the same chip on your shoulder b/c you already have a job lined up.

Its an economic malaise and not everyone is going to get their dream job. At least you have one.

P.S. Congrats on your position at what I assume to be a firm that starts with the letter B.

Unfortunately, this is just the way the hiring environment is. I also didn't get a job in the area I wanted one in, but a lot of people are getting no jobs at all or no jobs in finance that allow any upward mobility. You at least have an offer and will just have to continue to bust your butt after graduation.

Accept the job if nothing else comes up before then. And then keep looking for other opportunities. If another opportunity comes up, take it, if not, do your best at this job and continue to look. Be happy you have something, because it's certainly better than a lot of what your peers are doing.
