travel requirements for a new employee in Equity Research

For people fresh out of college who get hired by bulge banks, how many days of the year are spent on the road? What would be the purpose of the travel mostly?

You will meet with management and IRO's of the companies in your sector of coverage, wherever they are based. There are also marketing trips to different geographic regions to sit face-to-face with your firm's clients. In other words, a lot of travel wil be required.

I'd say twice a month for 2-3 days at a time is about normal. Less so for an associate or junior analyst. Traveling is usually either taking companies on non-deal road shows to meet with investors, meeting with investors yourself to market your research, or visiting with companies / attending analyst days. I'm sure some shops travel more and some travel less, but this is about average for us.
