Updated Views on UBS Equity Research

Anyone have insight into how UBS equity research is currently perceived? How do they do in terms of ranking, comp, exit ops? Is it a good path to get to a HF?

Been seeing a lot of hate on UBS but not sure whether that’s specific to IB

Thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, UBS Equity Research is generally seen as a solid platform, though it may not be at the very top of the rankings compared to other firms. UBS's overall reputation in investment banking and equity research has been mixed, with stronger performance in certain groups like TMT or Leveraged Finance, but not necessarily standing out across the board.

In terms of compensation, UBS is competitive but not at the highest tier. For example, average compensation for UBS analysts and associates in investment banking is slightly below top-tier firms like GS or MS, and this trend likely extends to equity research as well.

Regarding exit opportunities, UBS Equity Research can provide a pathway to hedge funds (HFs) or asset management (AM), but it may not be as direct or prestigious as coming from a top-tier equity research team at firms like GS, MS, or JPM. That said, success in transitioning to a hedge fund often depends on individual performance, networking, and the specific sector expertise gained.

While UBS has faced criticism, much of the negativity seems to be more pronounced in the IB space rather than equity research. If your goal is to move to a hedge fund, UBS Equity Research can still be a viable starting point, especially if you focus on building strong sector expertise and relationships.
