What does it takes to do a great ER analysis?

Hi guys, i'm still an undergrad student, i've been considering ib for a long time, but i joined one competition (from an Asset Management firm) and now i'm thinking about going into ER and maybe later HF. But about the competition, we are supposed to deliver an analysis about a single company we find interesting and the board will give the best team an internship. To all senior monkeys here, how can i learn to do a great analysis? Is there any ER team that put some analysis on their websites? Thank you.

http://www.rotmanassetmanagement.com/competitions/equity-research-compe… it is most likely Rotman (I could be wrong) since you mentioned an asset management firm, other ER competitions are:- https://www.cfainstitute.org/community/challenge/about/Pages/past_champ… -- for sample reports and presentations not excel models https://econ.duke.edu/dfe/programs/competitions-and-activities/morgan-s… http://www.pace.edu/lubin/departments-and-research-centers/global-portf…

ER Competitions are different from real life work for the most part since they want a detailed report which is usually done for an initial coverage (initiation report) of a firm, on a day to day basis in ER, rather the clients of the Sell Side ER do not have time for a detailed 20 or 30 page report, usually update notes are made and models are usually updated... even for making models from scratch the formats (in some cases even formulae) are already there .. however ER on the Buyside (Asset Management firms, Treasury Departments of Banks or other business, Insurance Firms) will be different and their reports are internal, the external reports given to clients are for portfolios/funds .. ask others over here who know more .. So this competition being from an Asset Management Firm could have a different type of report as compared to the CFA GIRC which is primarily for Sell Side ER, so make sure you know what they need, for example the Rotman ER Copmpetition reports are shorter around 5 to 6 pages, which is more realistic http://www.rotmanassetmanagement.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Report-…

for ER in general (primarily Sell Side) .. look into the links in the link below http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/doing-a-stock-pitch
