AN1: Briefcase or Backpack?
As a first year analyst, is it acceptable to be pulling up to the office with a briefcase? I acknowledge that I’m a recent college grad who should “know their place”. More than happy to wear a backpack for the first 12 months.
Half of our EDs still wear backpacks, while one or two analysts have briefcases. Nobody really cares I promise you.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, as a first-year analyst, a briefcase is absolutely acceptable and even expected in many cases, especially in formal environments like investment banking. A nylon or similar laptop bag/briefcase is a common choice, and bonus points if it has your company logo or a legacy company logo on it. This strikes a balance between professionalism and practicality.
While backpacks are functional, they are generally seen as less formal and might not align with the polished image expected in high finance roles. If you want to avoid a backpack but still prioritize practicality, a sleek, professional briefcase or laptop bag is the way to go.

I don’t think anyone will truly care. I personally used a Tumi messenger bag for the first couple of months but since I take my keyboard + mouse + water bottle back and forth I eventually transitioned over to a black Patagonia backpack.
Is it like a mechanical keyboard and mx master or something? Why do you take back and forth?
