Appropriate Attire for Situation
What if you were meeting up with an alum casually... no formality... not seeking a job and were just doing a friendly and casual meet-up... but at the alum's office... for coffee... alum graduated quite a few years ago and is now MD at his own firm... not anything related to Wall Street.
Very specific situation and I have no idea what to wear, I was thinking a white dress shirt with chinos and tan lace-ups, and maybe a navy blue blazer, but I'm not sure.
If at his office or in the business district, I'd go with a suit. If you don't have a suit, I'd go with at least chinos, white dress shirt, matching blazer. Button the blazer. Also, you don't want to dress down if at his office because you want to make sure you don't embarass him while at work. You're his guest and in a sense, reflect on him. Don't look like a ragamuffin.
As a note to the blazer - it's better if it isn't brass buttons.

Brass buttoned blazers are specifically for leisure, never business.

in all seriousness, this may take some thought. you don't want to embarass the guy by underdressing, but you will look like a complete tool if you show up in a suit and he's wearing jeans and a t-shirt (or even a polo and khakis).
what kind of a firm is it? would the alum be wearing a suit? IMO, without any other knowledge, the safest bet in these situations is to show up in "golf attire".

Size-wise- it's a very small firm that he owns. It's in financial services. It's not in a Wall Street-esque district. But, obviously, the alum wears wso/">suits to work. We've met before briefly so I know. But that meeting was not in the alum's office, as this one is. He will most definitely be wearing a suit and unfortunately I forgot to pack mine--I'm not on campus (Spring break).
Can you rent a suit somewhere? I've never done it myself.

In their office...always wear a suit. Its better to be overdressed than underdressed
not out of the question to mention you don't have your suit with you to the guy and see if he wants you to come in anyway or is willing to walk to the local coffeeshop, but only do this if its a genuine financial hardship for you. Another cheaper option is get a pair of pants that match the blazer, everyone can use navy pants and you won't look out of uniform in his office if its a headhunter/fund marketing firm or something where clients roll though.
