I've yet to begin full-time, but I remember when I was in the office for interviews at the firm I'm working at, my friend (guy who got me a job) walked in with an Under Armour gym bag. I'd guess that's pretty acceptable.
Probably wouldn't rock a brief case quite yet. A backpack could probably be fine, but it would depend on the type of backpack.
I used to carry around a nylon Tumi until I realized there's really no need to bring a bag to and fro every day. Just leave one in the office.
Plus, when you walk into the office late it's really obvious that you just showed up; whereas, if you walk in sans bag, you can play it off like you were in a meeting or something. ...a great tip from a departing analyst last year!
Post of the week!
I carried papers always, even if I just went for a walk.
i usually carry an employer branded messenger bag or duffel bag (if i'm planning to hit the gym). The company issued bag looks more acceptable than a regular gym bag or backpack. My main argument is that if it wasn't acceptable, they wouldn't have given it to me and stamped the company logo all over it.
I usually keep it in one of the closets near the elevator banks (so people don't notice you're coming in/leaving.
you don't really need to bring much with you, but it is helpful if you don't feel like jamming your cell phone, blackberry, keys, wallet, and iPod in your pant pockets.
Haha. Yes, on several occasions I may or may not have gone into the kitchen/supply room on the way into work and grabbed a pad of paper and a pen -- and then complained about "early morning conference calls" if i ran into someone...
i had the employer branded bag the first few weeks of my internship - i actually had shit that i had to read & go over. then i switched over to a small to medium sized leather briefcase kind of bag.
Bump...I'm interest in hearing what people brought to work as well, especially as a summer analyst. In school, I just had a northface backpack, but its worn out now. I was planning on buying a new bag...thinking about getting a leather messenger bag. What do you guys think? During my internship, I might want to bring some bagged lunches / quick snacks to eat so I can get my meals in and still eat healthy. I also want to bring a notebook to take notes of questions I have, etc.
I use a leather brief bag. It's got a strap like a messenger bag, handles like a brief case, and is a little bit smaller than your usual messenger bag.
Where did you buy it from and for how much? (Picture?)
I got an all black leather one from my dad.
You can buy one online at banana republic, http://bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=30845&vid=1&pid=586….
It's not black leather, but that's the idea.
Edit: It's pretty much this (fits a laptop): http://www.leathertree.com/xl-leather-computer-portfolio-408/
do you guys carry a cell phone as well as a blackberry?
I used to carry both, when I first started, but i've found it's better just to have the blackberry.

I just ordered myself a new business bag from Munk Bogballe in Berlin. I usually wear navy suits so I went for a green one.
What bag do you bring to work?
In the US, those are called purses and only women carry them.
I'm guessing you're one of those people that wears a backpack to work like a highschooler?
EDIT: I just looked up that bag and it's a legit woman's purse...Europe is so weird.
Official WSO Unacceptable Work Bags
1) A large purse/ mom carry-all bag 2) School Bag e.g. LL Bean monogrammed, JanSport, Eddie Bauer, etc 3) Rolling suitcase style bags (if you cannot carry your laptop via your arms/shoulder you are a one-punch-kill)

This is actually hilarious :'-D
I use an under armour drawstring bag....
Spaghetti straps are for womens' dresses
The bag I use looks similar to this (I don't have a picture of it, as it was made by a local leatherworker):

It does the job for me and looks good. Granted, I'm not in a more image-driven sector of the finance world, so maybe it's uncouth or shitty, but I like it. I prefer a classic, naturally tanned leather look.
did you just post this thread to brag about how much you spent on a satchel?
to answer the question, I don't have a bag that I need to carry to work regularly. if I did happen to work in NYC, I'd probably have something a little more rugged and wouldn't spend >$700 on it
adapt or die is a jansport acceptable if you've written all of your favorite quotes in white out pen on it? or am I the only one that did this in middle school...
"And if my day keeps goin' this way I just might break your fuckin' face tonight! GIMME SUMTHIN TO BREAK!!" --Limp Bizkit
"JNCO 4 Lyfe!!!!1"
When you roll into your BB with some good quotes penned on there is definitely helps, but in my mind to get top bucket you need to have at least two iron on patches of some sort of punk/grunge band or nintendo graphic. Without that form of flair, you're just another cog in the BB wheel.
believe it or not, i was actually just curious. i found it quite difficult to find a bag that was properly made, had just the right amount of space, wasn't a backpack, looked elegant without being boring etc. i had the brand recommended to me by a friend who raved about it, checked it out and ordered. now i have to wait a couple of weeks to get my hands on it as the bags are made to order. hope it'll be worth the wait.
anyway, if one doesn't care for design i see why the topic might be of little interest.
as for jansport, i'm not bringing in anywhere near enough money to pull that off with my boss.
This is what I rock, but sometimes I'm afraid MDs will think it's too much:

is that custom?
I actually used to work with a guy who brought all his stuff to work every day in a doubled up target plastic bag. Every day for 2 years he did it. He easily made 7 figures too. Pretty badass

Check out Jack Georges briefcases - if you get one of the larger ones you can carry your laptop/folders/electronics. Buying one of these (though pricy) was one of my best purchases.
I also carry a small gym bag just in case I have time to work out in the evening.
I have a pretty plan Coach leather briefcase - good for carrying around NYC for local engagements, decent on the plane for work travel and doesn't look like every other schmo with a Tumi.
My parents gave me an LV Icare in Damier Ebene. Best travel bag I've used besides Tumi.
Wow.... what a wanker banker. Anyone in my office would be openly mocked if they had anything that ostentatious. That was awfully nice of mommy and daddy though.
This bag makes me think of a French MD from BNP Paribas....
I use the bag my firm gave everyone during training lol. Works well enough. Pack my gym clothes in a backpack. Honestly nobody is going to give a shit.
Just bring a big duffel bag, you can also throw your gym shorts in there along with a few bottles of gatorade
Lol not as bad as someone with the Gucci pattern tote...seriously I have been someone who works at Goldman in Hong Kong with one of those.
Tumi alpha backpack
I use a black Dakine backpack like a normal human
There are only two brands I've really seen: Tumi and Jack Spade (I have the former).
The third option it your banking duffle bag. Just don't mix that with your PE shop'd vest ;)
Also, nobody really cares if you use a backpack, but don't ruin your suit coat. Skip the backpack and go for a duffel/laptop bag.
I use a Bag of Holding I picked up for like 200g from the local item shop. Easily fits my laptop, gym clothes, and Sword of a Thousand Truths +5. Just gotta make sure to keep any Portable Holes away from it.
My father's old black Picard. The bag's older than myself but still going strong.
This thread is hilarious. I hope the next one will be about the types of underwear they wear in IB and how it affects your chances during recruiting.
FO: anything designer BO: hanes/jockey PE: 2UNDR, though it's making waves in HF on the west coast

Wow, that thing is pricey.
In all seriousness, I sprung for this last year after 2 years of a random Swiss Army laptop bag that I bought the day before I started work: http://www.filson.com/luggage-bags/briefcases-computer-bags/original-br…
Great bag. I use the same in navy.
My bag: http://www.lyst.com/bags/mismo-ms-briefcase-melange-brown/
If you're going for the sleek laptop carrier you probably could have just gone for a Tumi option which looks a little less "feminine". I understand your bag was expensive and probably is quite chic in Europe - but it reminds me of a cross between a Mansur Gavriel tote and the Tumi laptop bag I use (http://www.tumi.com/p/nina-commuter-brief-079391D).
Still wear my black jansport backpack from highschool (used it all through college as well, things a relic).
Jansport '98 model. Jet black to match my mood in the morning. Carries all the essentials - Camelbak 750ml water bottle, sack lunch (PB&J + Cheese Its), current non-fiction book I am reading, glasses case, CFA books and flashcards, text books for work when needed, calculators (two), pens, pencils - you get the idea.
I am 100% serious. I also have a Tumi bag when I need it, but function > form for me.
Haha, has anyone at work ever tried to stuff you in a locker?
Jean Paul Gaultier.
Saddleback Leather briefcases are hard to beat

Can't go wrong.
Nice satchel...just finish up your newspaper route??
Say what you will about the price and potential for lackluster quality, but I recently copped this bad boy and have yet to break it out (waiting for the new job to start using it). Love the look/color combo:

Duffel bags
traditional backpack with company logo. gift for all analysts my year. i always get complimented on it.
Good variant is a leather briefcase. Apart from its functional role it also makes a man look classy and it is the definition of masculinity and professionalism. You can get anything from those with a vintage finish to modern ones and so you only have to choose what conforms to your tastes.
Superb Post ! All information together.
I have a hairy bag I take everywhere with me. I'm really close to it.
Rather interesting look ahead to returning
New Bag for work..? (Originally Posted: 08/21/2013)
I was wondering what kind of bags you guys use for work. My strap for my current one broke this morning so I'm in the market for a new one.
Any recommendations or styles I should go for? Right now, I had a leather satchel but I'm open to something a little different.
Thanks!
Fannypack.
Or get a regulator belt like I had when I was a Machoke - helps regulate my strength levels and doubles as a storage device!

The best possible bag which is the one that I also got, Saddleback. You can see it from saddlebackleather.com. The best bag to buy. Very professional but very expensive. But at the same time you're not paying for a name brand like Gucci or Gurka or any other fancy pants company. These bags are of the highest quality. Look into it.
They're way too heavy, even for leather bags. I wouldn't want to be carrying that around...
simple black leather messenger bag
You can go as expensive as you want here, but I'd stick to manufacturers that specialize in leather goods. Don't get an Armani bag for $2K because it isn't worth $2K. Used to wear a lot of brown and tan leathers, but I've kind of gotten bored of it and just stick to minimalism.
I can vouch for Saddleback. My father has a knack for destroying leather goods. This is the brand I buy for him. You may even get tired of the color before the bag quits.
I have a Saddleback. Great bag. Just be aware that even when empty, it's pretty heavy.
For the bag connoisseurs on here, what is your take on Dunhill? Always admired their stuff.
They have some beautiful leather briefcases. I like their soft ones better, but all quality stuff with understated design (mostly). Also not as crazily priced as similar quality ones.
I have a standard black leather Ben Minkoff. I like it.
Lots of leather fans on here. I got a Tumi bag as a graduation present and it looks as new as the day I got it.
What do you do that you need a bag?
Depends for what reason. If i'm riding on a bike ill go with a leather/canvas messenger bag but if it's just into the office I generally bring a standard leather briefcase.
I agree with quantitativeman13 - saddleback has great bags. They are expensive but they come with a 100 year warranty. Check out leatherlaptopbackpacks(dot)com to check out saddleback and some other great bags.
Check out lotuffleather. I love their stuff and the quality is amazing. Comes at a price though.
coach
Love my saddleback bag. Been using it for years now and its still looking great.
Price is a bit steep, but you pay for the top grain leather and lifetime warranty.
Gotta second the Saddleback. It takes any sort of wear and tear and keeps looking better. If you've got some time to kill, check out their website and read through. Great writing.
Get a Tumi bag. I got one when Nordstrom had its anniversary sale and its fantastic. It's not cheap, but it's quality and looks both professional and appealing.

Bag for Training/FT (Originally Posted: 06/28/2011)
I was wondering what bag people use for training/FT? Ive searched around and people say you need a messenger bag or its casual and it looks dumb. I was about to buy a Jack Spade one but after reading comments am hesitant.
Are messenger bags ok?
First day of training they give you a bag and that's what most people use.
^Oh that is the standard at every BB? Well if that is the case you just saved me two hundred bucks haha. Do most people use that for work as well as training?
Yes, that's the standard for analysts during training. Some people get a bag once they start work, some people keep using it... no one really cares.
Doesn't really matter what you bring. Just don't get some insanely expensive bag and look douchey but also don't bring your shit to work in a plastic bag. Most firms give a nice company duffel or messenger bag during first week of training - if not the first day.
I see people in my office come with backpacks but play it safe until you know what's acceptable and what would be frowned upon.
Whatever you get, make sure there's tons of LVs plastered all over it
VP at a BB - I started with an Allen Edmonds single gusset briefcase bag and love using that, very classy for any work environment. I recently switched it to a briefcase bag from the company “swag store” because it’s lightweight and I wanted to show some company pride.
Atlas was once the briefcase of choice for MBB roadwarriors. A bit heavy, but roomy and indestructible. Does anyone still carry these?
Dont try hard and you will be andolutely f*** fine.
Saw intern kid w a old school brief case... he did not get an offer
What bag to bring/fashion in wealth management (Originally Posted: 05/29/2017)
I will be a wealth management intern this summer, what fashion rules should I be aware of? Also any suggestions on type of bag (briefcase, messenger) and brands I should choose and/or avoid? I've also heard that my belt should match the color of my shoes is this true? Thanks!
Belt and shoes is a given, brown shoes and black belt literally makes my eyes water, but - some men are happy being repulsive to both sexes.
In regards to the bag/briefcase, I have seen both. I haven't seen a lot of people under 30 with briefcases, more of the messenger/document holder/etc. seems to be a lot more common.
Also, most common would be nothing at all - I mean unless you are taking lunch to work, you have your security pass, wallet and phone? Not much need for a bag.
Are there any brands you would avoid as a summer intern for brands/any attire
A bag without logos would be my choice.
