Best UK Work Clothes Brands
Wondering how to stock my wardrobe for work (when we're back to the office). Obviously this question is largely subjective, but if anyone has any recommendations for the following / could share what has worked for them, that would be excellent. For reference, I'm a new analyst at a London BB. Thanks!
- How many suits (jackets / trousers)?
- How much to spend on suits? One nice one and a few backups, or all similar price? Brand recommendations?
- How many shirts? All white? Are other colours acceptable? Brand recommendations?
- How many pairs of shoes? Stick to all black or are any other colours fine?
- Non-iron clothes? Take to dry cleaner weekly?
I like Eton, Stenstroms, and Thomas Pink shirts. They're a tad more expensive than other stuff but if you're lucky you can pick them up on a sale for ~£60 each. The difference in how much better they look and how much longer they'll last is definitely worth it in my opinion. I'd get 7-10; take to dry cleaners in alternating batches.
For suits, I'd also recommend finding a brand that makes ones that fit your figure well and then get some minor alterations done. 2 suits is enough. No need for anything tailored or bespoke as an analyst, in my opinion. Other can maybe chime in on brands.
Shoes: Church's Plain Black Oxford's. Best purchase you'll make. They'll last >10 years.
I assume you're in IB? S&T will, of course, be more casual.
Not OP, but how many pants would you recommend getting a long with the 2 suits and 7-10 shirts?
Also curious about this, I heard Suit Supply is quite popular with junior bankers, it's still fairly expensive though. £70 for shirts (minimum) and for a decent suit probably £430 - £480 including tailoring.
I am fairly cheap regarding clothing for what I wear to the office - though I have a nicer suit for client meetings.
Shirts: 10 from Charles Tyrwhitt (extra slim fit, long arms option for me) - I prefer white as it's simpler to wash it it starts to get stained under the armpits, but also got 1-2 blue ones and it's definitely acceptable. I mostly use the dry cleaner although mine are non iron and it takes 3 mins to iron them (I only do the front and arms to look extra crisp, rest looks fine for non iron)
Suits: 2 basic ones from CT (I am 6'4) so it's hard to find suits with arms long enough - for the sub £500 range they are the only ones that fit me (all in should be £200/per suit) + a nicer suit that I wear when I get to go to client meetings from Lanieri.
Shoes: got 2 black oxfords (I try to alternate and all that stuff but TBH it's more of a backup second pair of shoe) + one pair of loafers (summer fridays) + one pair of chelsea boots (rainy/winder fridays)
Socks: just black ones
ties: got like 4-5, I keep one on my desk at any time
Also for London - highly recommend buying a scarf (navy/grey) and gloves, nobody wants to be sick as an analyst.
I'm also super cheap with office clothes. Same as you through my analyst and PE years on shirts. Suits I use suit supply but same price range ~$450 all in per suit, shoes I go with ferragamo livingstone loafers with the black bits, socks the same, and ties are all ferragamo (a lot of gifts here though - most aren't my purchase).
