I honestly read this as 'crapped pants with brown loafers as an intern' the first time and thought "who cares what shoes you wore when you shat yourself?"
Depends on the bank, your gender, and day of the week.
If you're an intern trying to secure a FT offer and you have to ask yourself "Is what I'm wearing appropriate?", then the answer is probably no and you're probably better off playing it safe.
Fast forward a year. What’s the first thing that comes into peoples’ minds when they think about you?
1) The guy who’s always “on trend” with fashion
2) the guy you can always count on to get shit done
If you’re targeting 1), notice what the most successful guys are wearing who are a year ahead of you in the program. Learn from their example.
Theoretically possible to achieve both, but most Finance organizations are highly hierarchical and conformist, rewarding performers who demonstrate good “cultural fit.” Also, corporate clients look for creative flair from their ad agencies, not their bankers and lawyers.
Not saying this is how things should be, just sharing what I’ve observed.
