Overcoat ettiquete/color?

I’m a college student picking up a wool overcoat for interviews this winter. I wear a navy suit w/ black shoes and belt. From what I could find, older threads lean towards charcoal or navy and are split on black, but most are 10+ years old so I’m not sure that still holds. Curious what people actually wear / what would be acceptable? Also open to recs on the type of overcoat

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know about overcoat etiquette and color for interviews:

  1. Color Recommendations:

    • Charcoal or Navy: These are the safest and most versatile options. They pair well with a navy suit and black shoes, maintaining a professional and polished look.
    • Black: While acceptable, it’s generally less favored unless you’re in a very formal setting or region where black is the norm. Charcoal or navy tends to be more versatile and less severe.
  2. Type of Overcoat:

    • Stick to a classic wool overcoat. Look for a single-breasted design with notch lapels for a timeless and professional appearance.
    • Ensure the overcoat is long enough to cover your suit jacket completely, typically ending just above the knee or mid-thigh.
    • Opt for a tailored fit to avoid looking bulky or unkempt.
  3. Additional Tips:

    • Avoid bold patterns or flashy details. Solid colors or subtle textures like herringbone are ideal.
    • Make sure the overcoat complements your overall outfit without drawing too much attention.

For a college student, investing in a charcoal or navy wool overcoat is a smart choice. It’s versatile, professional, and will serve you well beyond interviews.

Funniest

I have one overcoat. It is charcoal and it’s all I need. Ultimately, it’s a fucking overcoat. You wear it on the walk in. It’s basically a winter sludge condom for your suit. Here is a pro-tip, if you don’t get hired over your overcoat then consider that a gift from God.

Only two sources I trust, Glenn Beck and singing woodland creatures.
