Yes people in nyc own cars. There's probably private parking available and they get to drive on weekends. Parking is too expensive and most people take the train as traffic is ridiculous in NYC during rush hours. Well if you're rich, the point of owning a car, depending on the type of car you drive, is to either show off or for practical purposes to get you out of the city on weekends to relax somewhere in addition to running your normal errands.
Monthly parking in a garage, not a lot, will run you around $400/month and you can get your car whenever you want. Some people own cars, some don't. My dad has never owned a car his entire life, born and raised in NYC. When he needs a car he just gets a zipcar. My grand mom owns a car and uses the garage in her building but my grand dad has never had a drivers license.
Also, no offense but you seem like a total prestige whore. Please do not go out and buy a rolls royce phantom just because you have the cash on hand to do so. Not everyone in NYC lives like a celebrity
Thanks for the tips turtle, monthly costs don't seem too bad.
jmayem, I already have a cayman, wanted to upgrade soon but I guess I'll just sell it for now, at least until I can actually use it.

If you're family lives in LI, just keep it with them. A majority of my Jersey friends who live in the city / Brooklyn / Hoboken keep their cars at their parents houses and pick them up on the weekends if they need them.
Actually, I was thinking about starting a thread on a very related topic -- I was going to ask what a typical "banker car" would be...what cars do IB guys usually like? I could see it vary tremendously with age, but maybe the MB S class as mentioned, maybe the Lexus LS460? The Mercedes CLS 550?

Typical banker car? The subway. Maybe a cab when you make associate. Black car at night.
Ambitionbugatti veyron, but I have to own my own PE shop to ever get one of those ha
My dream car is a rolls royce ghost haha, it is just so elegant and beautiful. I just hate how so many people labeled the rolls royce brand as gaudy and flashy. I like it for its heritage and looks, and the fact that its now a drivers car and in the $200k range as opposed to the Phantom which is in the $400k range
I am also a car fanatic. My goal is the be early 30's with a truck (hummer) exotic car (masersti probably) and a luxury car mercedes benz or bmw. In my mid to late 20's i want to have a suv and a sports car. Many people are gonna drop money on name brand clothes and watches. I just want a nice pad, healthy portfolio, and a respectable car stable.
I thought the standard stereotypical bankers car was the BMW. 3 series for starters and upgrade to 5-7 series over time. Is this no longer the case? I drive a Honda CR-V because I needed a compromise between roomy for my 2 kids and compact enough to park in city streets so I'm really not in the know.
Yeah I remember when I visited NYC for a competition and seeing the hourly parking there, It would almost seem nuts to own a car there just by virtue of parking it. Though if I had the money, fuck the car I would get myself a f***king Helicopter. Though an M5 would be nice, the sound on those things are off the charts.
i live in LI, used to own a BMW 3series and literally only drove it to and from teh train station. just got rid of it recently. no regrets as having a car was convienent. but not necessary.

You mean guys like Glenn Myles, Founder of First Wall Street...
MDs in NY drive Mercedes S 550 and S 600 and UBSs MDs drive Honda Civic or Toyota Prius

I take the subway to work in the morning and the bank pays for a car home. Parking is like $500-600 a month. Why would I want a car again?
I rent if I need a car.
But check out this Maserati... http://uncrate.com/stuff/maserati-gran-turismo-s-superior-black-edition/
