Dress Shirt Collar Type
Hey Guys,
I'm working in S&T at a BB in NYC this summer. Given that I won't need to wear a tie, what type of collar should I go with in my dress shirts: a collar that is button-down or one that isn't.
Here are the three examples I'm debating between:

Definitely not button down, way too informal (for interns at my office at least). I like the Ainsley one.
First see how the shirts look without a tie. If the collar spreads out too far (since you have no tie to keep it together), it looks like shit.
No button-downs. I use these. Magnetic collar-stays, in the rare chance I go sans tie.

Yeah I have some of those and really like them too. Perfect for a jacket sans tie to keep your collars inside the lapels. Never want the 70s collar over the jacket look.

cutaway/extreme spread collars are boss. I picked up two snap-tabs too after watching Skyfall hah

You should wear or not wear spread collars based on your face and jaw shape. They aren't inherently "better" or "higher brow"
What face and jaw shape suits them best? Tbh I have to admit that (although I'm pretty fashion conscious) I hadn't even considered that, because I think they look awesome.
I have an oval face shape and can supposedly wear any type of collar ha. Question remains valid. Seems like I have my answer though, sounds like they're fine.
I wear only spread and cut-away collars, but CRE is right concerning face and jaw shape.
Do you tie a fuller/wider tie knot since you wear spread collars?

Do not buy Ben Sherman. If you make the mistake of buying Ben Sherman, do not wear it to work.
If its Macquarie, those guys always came off as bros, so just stay away from skinny ties/flashy suits/bling watches and you'll be fine.

Thanks guys, appreciate the advice. I'll be in the US for the fall semester on exchange and am leaving a bit early and heading right to my internship in Sydney so have to do all my clothes shopping in NYC...I'm planning on buying suits from Suit Supply and shirts from Charles Tyrwhitt(?), shoes, belts, socks and ties etc from wherever. Do those sound like fair places to go, or should I look elsewhere?

Tyrwhitt has good sales, but I would shy away from buying at full price. Their ties and socks are very good quality for the price.
No. As long as you don't wear whimsy ties, a four in hand works fine (maybe with an extra turn). Definitely a sophisticated look, unless you wear crazy spreads. Full windsor can scream wannabe (depending on the whole outfit and style of the person).

Do not know if it is ongoing, but it seems like they always have some kind of deal going on whenever I walk by one of their stores. They have at least 3 that I know of in midtown.
Definitely go to suitsupply. I have 3 suits from there and Ive gone to bespoke tailors and they have said the quality for the price is astronomical. One of the guys was even worried that if older people catch on it will significantly ruin their business
That's a pretty impressive testimonial- thanks for that. I was thinking of buying CT shirts and possibly suits if on sale but may just go to suit supply regardless now- would you say suit supply is superior to CT suits at a better price?
I generally only wear cutaway or spread collars. I think they look the best, IMO.

When it comes to collars, I wear forward point unless I'm going casual.
+1 CT. Quality is obviously not extraordinary at this price point, but compared to the usual warehouse crap stuff it's really decent.
I'm not sure if the shirt in question has a shirt pocket... if so, I'd pass.
Speaking of the face type ... In my book a moderate spread fits all types. If someone has a very round face it's still a round face, even if the person wears a point collar. Sorry. Wearing an extreme spread might be counterproductive, yes, but apart from the well known RL cutaway there are not too many in this category.

It depends a lot on how old you are. If you're in college, I would consider it a zero upside with some downside move.
I loathe to say it, but it's really for the geezers only. Younger guys come off as kinda cheesy. Personally, I hate this rule because I like contrasting collars, but I wouldn't do it on the desk or anywhere else.

I like the style, but wouldn't wear it in an interview setting.
Just make sure the shirt also has your initials embroidered in cursive and you should be fine for your internship.
Don't forget the baller cufflinks.
Really not appropriate for lower-level employees. One summer, an intern in my group came into work wearing one and was teased about it non-stop. Ended up leaving in the middle of the day to go home and change.

Somehow I don't believe this at all.
To me, the only time contrasting collared shirts are okay are if you: A) are in UK, B) are >= 60 years old. Please don't embarrass yourself. Don't do it.
I like the shirts. They're very powerful. But the thing is that if you're gonna wear them and you don't have any upper division role you're gonna look foolish.
^ all the above is true and relate to. But I also feel its perpetuating a myth if you havent ever worn one yourself. Even if you saw others do it and haze them for it, it takes personality and.. mm balls. I worn one to the desk one day, with cufflinks and red tie and no one gave me shit over it ( I may have been the unspoken joke of the day) but no one dared say anything to me. I think it just really takes confidence and personality to rock ANYTHING. btw.. 2 yr analyst.

English Spread, occasionally a Cutaway. I've never understood some people's obsession with a button-down, it's such an ugly collar.

Agreed, I hate being able to see people's collars when they are wearing a suit, therefore I stick with spread or semi-spread, mostly semi-spread.
Most of my shirts are Spread and Forward-point, but I like Button-down best.

I am ~180 pounds, 6 feet tall. I have a skinny neck and large adam's apple. Should I be looking to buy more Ainsley or Point collar styles for my dress shirts?
Sorry if my question seems silly but the site hasn't led me astray yet in terms of fashion advice. I will be buying both styles, but what would best accent the features of someone with a skinny neck?
