Finance closet from scratch

Hi guys

If anyone is bored, could I get a run down of all the essentials I’d need to have a well rounded closet for events and work. ( current sophomore). At the moment I’ve got a black suit and black dress shoes and a couple random dress shirts but I’d like to have a more structured closet that has everything I’d need for general use and ideally working in nyc the next 2 summers and beyond. No specific budget but keep in mind am a student and looking for where to start

Thanks!

Ahoy there! You're embarking on a stylish journey into the finance world, and I'm here to guide you through building a well-rounded closet that'll have you looking sharp for events and work, especially in the bustling streets of NYC. Let's dive into the essentials based on the most helpful WSO content:

Suits

  • Colors & Fabric: Expand beyond your black suit. Consider adding a navy and a dark grey-charcoal suit to your collection. These colors are versatile and suitable for almost any occasion. Stick with wool fabrics for durability and comfort.
  • Fit: Ensure your suits are well-fitted. An ill-fitting suit is noticeable and can detract from your professional appearance. It might be worth investing in tailoring.

Shirts

  • Variety: You already have a couple of dress shirts, but let's add more to the mix. Aim for at least 5 shirts: white, sky blue, a dark blue, a low or high contrast striped white or blue shirt, and a check or plaid shirt. Variety will keep your wardrobe interesting.
  • Fabric & Cuffs: Stick with cotton poplin fabric for breathability and comfort. Barrel cuffs are recommended for ease of use and a clean look.

Shoes

  • Expanding Beyond Black: While you have black dress shoes, consider adding a pair of brown oxfords or derbies to your collection. Brown shoes offer versatility and can be paired with navy or grey suits for a modern look.

Ties

  • Essentials: Have at least 5 ties in your rotation. A dark blue, dark red, and a diagonal relatively narrow stripe are good starters. Ties can add a pop of color and personality to your outfit.

Accessories

  • Belts: Match your belt to your shoes. Having one black and one brown belt will cover all bases.
  • Watch: A simple, elegant watch can elevate your professional appearance. It doesn't have to be expensive, just tasteful.

Additional Tips

  • Budget-Friendly Brands: For a student budget, brands like Charles Tyrwhitt, Suit Supply, and Indochino offer good quality at reasonable prices. Keep an eye out for sales and multi-buy deals.
  • Care: Take good care of your clothes. Regularly dry clean your suits, iron your shirts, and polish your shoes. This will extend their life and keep you looking sharp.

Remember, building a well-rounded closet is a journey. Start with the essentials and gradually add pieces as you discover your personal style and professional needs. Good luck, and may your finance closet be as promising as your career!

If I was just starting off I would do the following:

  • Navy + Dark Gray Suit (Suit Supply is good, and get 2 pairs of pants per jacket)
  • Black + Brown Oxfords (Allen Edmonds, Cole Haan, Meermin)
  • Black + Brown Belt to Match Shoes
  • 5 White, 3 Light Blue, 1 Lightly Checked Dress Shirts (CT - 3 for $99 Deal)
  • Black / Navy / Dark Gray / Brown Socks
  • 5 -10 V-Neck Undershirts (Gray matches skin tone much better than white and is harder to see through shirt)

Some other items/tips:

  • Watch - Apple Watch is fine, but if you want a real/classic watch Luxury (Tudor Black Bay, Cariter Tank, or Nomos) or "affordable" (Tissot Gentleman or PRX, Seiko Presage, or Citizen Tsuyosa)
  • Black  > Brown Leather, because you can wear Black with both Navy and Gray
  • Black Leather Loafer
  • Lulu ABC Smooth Twill is very comfortable and passes in the office as long as you don't have a client meeting
  • Quarter Zip (Black, Navy, or Gray)
  • Beige Chino (Casual Summer Days)
  • White and/or Light Blue Polo (Causal Summer Days)
  • If in NYC/Chicago/Boston you will need an overcoat (so you can wear your suit jacket under it)
  • If in NYC/Chicago/Boston a Black Leather pair of Chelsea or Chukka boots may be helpful during the winter (not necessary, but nice to have in general)
