My first suit was from Jos A Bank, but I had probably $600 to my name at the time. It still works today, after a few years, so I'd say it was a good starter suit.

I'd like to spend no more than ~$800.
Another challenge is that I am tall and wiry/slim/gaunt - so a lot of generic off-the-rack suits just don't fit right. ...might end up just spending on the MTM route
Keep in mind that off-the-rack suits can be tailored to a perfect fit for marginal extra cost. I would recommend you check out suit supply, charles tyrwhitt, and hugo boss for suits which will fit the bill as good starter suits and which are within your budget. Best of luck!
Suit supply has some good stuff if you want to avoid the designer game. As said above, your budget matters - sometimes you can get MTM for less than $1K, sometimes even less than $800.
To suit your budget and personality go for custom made suits and a budget of $800 sounds just fine for a MTM suit but, try going to physical store rather than ordering online,for a first shot perfect fit.
Macy's has decent suits, but you gotta get there when they have sale and take a look at what they got [you gotta know whats quality without looking at brand, sometimes sales person can help you] and maybe save 40-60%.
Get 3 suits at JAB for that price. This will leave you with a different suit for each day of the week. Once you have been working and have some money you can replace them with more expensive suits.
There are many online shopping sites which provide tailored suit at an reasonable price, so you can go with it

What retail outlets do you guys recommend for picking up a very nice suit that is modestly priced. I'd say I'm willing to commit at most 1000 to the entire interviewing outfit. Any suggestions?
century 21 in downtown nyc. you can find $300-$400 hugo boss suits, ~$100 dress shoes and $30-$40 designer ties... if this is what you're seeking. it's a fucking zoo, but one of the best outlets in the city.
Just get something simple that fits and won't stand out.
Yeah, unless you just want an expensive suit (for other reasons) there's no reason to drop $1000 on a suit for interviews...
it depends on what type and level position you are interviewing for.
if its associate or a client facing position, you should spend more to make sure you look good and the suit fits well. if you can't take the time to look professional for an interview, why would they think you are going to turn it around when they hire you.
if its for an analyst position, look presentable and you should be fine.
there is nothing worse than a poorly fitting suit.
