My first watch purchase - I bought a Movado. Did I make the right decision?

I've never worn a watch before but I made the decision to buy one a few months back when I was at a jewelry store. I tried on a Movado and fell in love. So, a few days ago I bought a Movado Vizio. I'm 22 and really inexperienced when it comes to watches.

I've gotten compliments on it except from my boss. He wears a Breitling, and also owns a Tag along with some other watches but I'm not too sure of the brand. He said I over paid, and for how much I paid I could of gotten something much nicer like a Omega. After tax it cost me about $2,300.

Don't know if I should take it back or do more research when I purchase my next watch.

Wow, dad is getting me a Patek Caltrava as a gift for graduation of MSF...feel like I am going to be uncomfortable wearing to the office and possibly having a nicer watch than boss.

Tell your dad politely that the money can be spent better elsewhere (upgrade apartment lease, transfer to an investment account, fund business idea, etc). A watch of that caliber may bring some negative attention (i.e. your family's wealth helped to get where you are or that you have poor financial discipline)... some ppl may assume the watch is unauthentic.

Feel like you have more to lose than gain by wearing such an extravagant watch.

I really appreciate the honesty. I am honestly not a flashy guy at all, and I actually feel like a douche when I wear my Michael Kors watch...which is pretty rare too.

This is the one that I would get...I feel like it looks relatively discreet and most people wont be able to tell under the sleeve unless they know about watches.

Looks like any other watch IMO but you guys may be right.

Wear on the weekend. Not at work. I wouldn't ask your dad to change the watch though as it may make him feel uncomfortable. Just wear the watch on weekends

OP: your boss was right. At that price point, I would have gone for a new Omega.

Enti: Unfortunately, wearing a PP around the office will cause some people to judge you. It's a great gift, but I wouldn't wear it to work until you are more senior.

$2300 for a movado? Yeah............ bad purchase.

@yeahright: That's exactly what I was thinking. No way I'd pay 500 for a Movado, much less 2300. This was a horrific purchase. I'd exchange for a Tag Heuer Aquaracer stainless or perhaps a Baume & Mercier Clifton with a black leather band and white dial.

Nothing wrong with the brand. Its just a mid range watch. HOWEVER for $2,300 it is NOT worth it in my opinion. You can get a lower end Omega for around $3,500 and that is always a much flashier and nicer brand. Movados should be around $500-800 tops.

Boss is right, OP. Although Movados aren't bad. Just, as others have said, not really worth $2300.

Also, honestly, unless you have like a rose gold Breitling from the Bentley collection, I don't understand how anyone could think a watch is too flashy. Just don't be a douche about it, constantly showing it off and telling everyone how nice of a watch you have. I tend to think that people who are put out by other's subtle apparel choices should really worry about more important things.

One quick trip around the internet could have allowed for a fairly accurate appraisal of the market value for that watch. You could also have taken a look around at other options since you are inexperienced before shelling out 2.3K on something. Aside from this clearly being a poorly thought out move on your part, I would imagine the watch came with a return policy of some sort? Try to return it and buy something better for that price, or save your money and get the same or a similar watch for less somewhere else.

All based on personal taste. However, you've asked for thoughts so here we go...

Personally don't think they look great...and that's coming from a minimalist guy.

It's a watch that's not cheap but not really that expensive either. The kind of watch I'd expect a middle manager to wear. I think you're better of going with something cheaper like Seiko until you can buy that rollie (and not have to think twice about the price).

Listen, here's the thing. If you can't spot the sucker in the first half hour at the table, then you are the sucker.

I recently went through the process of getting a watch. I've learned it depends on your wrist size. Example: my wrist is about 6.25 inches (ive got a skinny frame). That 42mm diameter would be huge on me. I need to stick to watches with a case under 40mm, but sub-38mm is ideal.

Average and fat dudes can still have skinny wrists. I'd measure yours to find out if this is realistic for you.
