Return to Office Attire?

Will be hitting the desk this summer at an office in the south, and it seems the suit and tie dresscode is no longer a thing, everyone wears slacks and polo's in the summer and slacks w/ quarter zips in the winter. This said, where are some good places to get quarter zips and polos? I love Bonobos weekday warrior pants and was thinking Peter Millar for tops. Also, is it worthwhile to go ahead and get a solid suit now, or wait until that necessity arises?

TIA

I used to live by Peter Millar until I die but recently have found that I'm not a huge fan of their selection as well as their newer things. Overall still a solid brand, but I've steered away from them. Suit + tie is getting to be a thing of the past everywhere I've found, and although I own more suits than I can count, it's rare I have to throw them on. Exception is usually a formal meeting (multiple teams and divisions) or a particularly important client (one that we don't know very well, or another large meeting).

Everyone loves to hate on the midtown fit, but if you take away the douche culture affiliated with it and focus on the actual clothing, I think it covers every base you need. I'd say pretty much every day, I'm usually wearing a collared button-down with chinos or slacks, dress-ish shoes, and a q-zip or vest if it's warmer. In the summer usually I drop the over layer, and just rock the button-down tucked in.

My personal favorite clothing brand is Rhone. God damn - so fucking comfortable. The commuter shirt is fantastic, it's pricey but you can get some deals. Machine-washable, anti-wrinkle, anti-sweat, and it feels like you're chilling in a cloud. They make the commuter pants too, which is my go-to hybrid chino pant. I also think J. Crew's higher-end stuff is fantastic - doesn't break the bank, and actually looks and feels really good. Some people don't like to wear the J. Crew line because of the brand - "it's not high-end enough, I feel like I'm poor," and I've just never understood that mentality. When you're my age, thankfully, most people stop thinking like that and just wear what's comfortable and meets their pricepoint.

Get a mid-range suit now. If you're looking to stay in the budget, turn to Suitsupply or check out Brooks Brothers package deals. If you want to go a little nicer, maybe check out Canali or RLBL. The most important thing - get your suit tailored! A cheaper, exact-fitting suit beats the hell out of a very nice and expensive ill-fitting suit. No one is gonna give a shit that you're wearing Banana Republic vs. Dolce & Gabbana if it doesn't even fit you. Best of luck!

For suits, I absolutely recommend getting one now. The only thing worse than suit shopping last minute is settling for an ill fitting suit. Just sucks.

If you don't want to deal with MTM stuff - try some different brands, see what sizing gets you closest. BB and Suit Supply tend to work well for me - with minor alterations.

I'd also invest in one or two good pairs of shoes - classic oxford types, Allen Edmonds or similar are a good place to start. You may not wear them everyday but I find shoes are the quickest way to bring up, or bring down, an outfit. Plus if you take care of them they'll last a long time. If you can wait a bit - I bought a pair from Beckett Simonon. They have some longer lead times, and sizing can be annoying, but found them to be great looking and feeling shoes for the price point. Often near half of Allen Edmonds... who also has so many sales now, I wouldn't pay full price for them anymore.

Are you starting as an intern or FT? Either way would say start with dress shirts and see what the other interns/first years are wearing. Even if everyone else is wearing golf shirts during the summer, I wouldn't be that casual just starting out. It's dumb but think there are some seniors who still care about this.

Last summer I started mixing in golf shirts towards the end (I had lateraled mid year). Sounds like you can wear lulu/Rhone pants right away though.

On suits, would go ahead and get one before you start. Never know when that last second meeting will happen where everyone is wearing suits. As said above, worth it to get something custom or MTM. I prefer Enzo Custom given their price points/quality.
