When you guys wear suits do you get shoulder divots or shoulder dimples? Every time i try on a suit the padding on the shoulders bunches up, however the rest of the suit fits just fine.
Anything i can do to fix these shoulder divots?

You need to be more concerned that a suit fits your shoulders than anything else when trying them on. A tailor will fix the rest but the shoulders are what they are. So try a bigger suit.
i've tried suits a size too big, just right, and a size too small, and all result in shoulder divots. i suppose i could get a tailor to resize the pads but idk what else to do at this point.
A good tailor will remove/resize the pads for you, which should help with the wrinkling.
Is it common these days for suits to be cut with fairly high arm openings? I seem to remember reading somewhere that has become the standard, but if you have some extra shoulder muscle going on, you might benefit from a different cut. WardrobeEssentialist , is that something that would help?
High-fashion has moved towards ultra-tight suits with high arm holes that restrict movement, but I’m guessing that most guys in finance have resisted the temptation to chase that shiny object.
I agree with other comments: get the shoulders right, and tailor the rest. The best option is the go to a store that carries multiple brands and has experienced, knowledgable associates. I’ve had good luck at Nordstrom, others like Barney’s or Saks, Different brands have very different interpretations of 42L. Some will be perfect, and others way off. The best way to learn what’s right for you is to try multiple options.
You may be among the unlucky few who can’t get a good fit with off-the-rack. Better brands offer made-to-measure, which will take more time but fit better. You can also try online made-to-measure like Proper Cloth or Indochino, but beware of offers that seem too good to be true: they probably use cheap fabric, and a perfectly-fitting suit made of cheap fabric won’t make the professional impression you seek.
great in depth response. unfortunately cannot afford MTM yet and even though the shoulders and rest of the suit fit well, aesthetically you can see the divots right below the shoulders.
would getting a tailor to repad or remove some of the padding around the shoulders help?
otherwise i'll have to live with the divots until i can buy MTM

TD;DR: the geometry of the armhole and shoulder form the foundation of a suit, and its extremely challenging and expensive to alter. The tailor has to take off the arm and do serious recutting, so it’s expensive and if he’s not highly skilled, you might end up worse off.
Bottom line to readers: look carefully for this issue when you try on a jacket, and immediately move on from a brand/size that shows it. The designer did not have you in mind when he built his product.
