Unsightly Shirt Billowing
So what's the best way to stop unsightly shirt billowing (particularly in the back)?
I'm on the thinner side but most slim/custom fit or cut shirts make me look like I'm about to bust out of my shirt.
Is this something a tailor would be able to remedy? SUSPENDERS?
Thanks,
The answer is to realize that this is too trivial to matter.
Btw, suspenders are pimp.
omg what will the MDs think if your shirt is billowing?? That really is "unsightly"...
Honestly, you have bigger things to worry about than your shirt billowing. You are probably the type of guy that spends an hour primping in the morning too.
What the fuck is this society coming to...
Dude this isn't trivial
All my shirts looks like they were fitted while I was wearing a camelbak
If it just had wrinkles or something I wouldn't give a shit.
Try brooks brothers slim fit shirts, (NOT extra slim fit)
If you look like you're about to bust out of those, maybe you should stick with the billowing
lorenzini makes shirts that can be buttoned to the pants on the insight to prevent this exact thing from happening. you may wanna look around for them or alternatively you could just get your hands on one and have your tailor adapt your shirts/pants to match theirs.
I'd say just try various places until you find something that fits, then stick with that. I have some BB slim fit, and I'd agree that it's probably a good place to start looking. You can of course get your shirts tailored, but that is going to end up being expensive and annoying.
I'd disagree this is trivial. I know my MD doesn't care, but I'm pretty sure any girl I'm trying to pick up will.
Its called blousing your shirt, you tuck in the excess materials into the sides (equally on both sides). We used to do it while in the Marines (Uniform C). It made your shirt front and back seemed more presentable and professional. We also wore suspenders that pulled your shirt down, but thats too much, try blousing
Blousing will work, but spend a couple bucks and just go to a tailor.
Honestly, take every single thing you own and go to the tailor. Clothes were made for a standard body size. Slim fit can take care of some of the issue, but it will never be perfect for your body. It is like $10 bucks or so to fit a shirt.
Agreed, this is a real problem. Brooks Brothers slim fit shirts may work for some people, but I've found really the only way to fix it completely is to get custom tailored shirts. You can do this on the cheap by finding one of the traveling tailors like Maxwell's that will take your measurements and cloth choice, then have the shirts cut by child laborers in Hong Kong. They usually come out to about $60 / shirt, and fit well.
If $10/shirt is all it costs for a tailor to fix I might just drop $100-200 to get my shirts resized.
CaptK -- As an intern I think I'll hold off until full time recruiting and accelerated interviews are done. Time to whip out those slim fit shirts, extra thick undershirts, and tape my nipples down...
Out of the slim fit shirts I have here is the order of tightness:
Brooks Brothers Slim - not really for thin people Thomas Pink Slim - Slightly tighter than BB (this may be good for you to try) Charles Tyrwhitt - very slim fitting and my favorite (may be too slim for you though)
Having your shirt blouse out is not a good look. Any time I see guys wearing ill-fitting shirts, it reminds me of kids in high school wearing their dad's suit for whatever reason.
For dress shirts, I typically wear custom shirts. As a previous poster mentioned, you can have these made-to-measure shirts for around $60 from a tailor in Hong Kong. A custom shirt will always fit the best since its built to fit your specific torso.
For off the rack button-down wovens, I've never had much luck finding shirts that are tapered enough. I usually avoid any sport shirt with darts in the back since they look a little feminine in my opinion. I usually take off-the-rack shirts into a tailor and have them take in the sides. If the arms are too big, I'll have them take those in too. The place I take my shirts charge $25 for just tapering. This can definitely add up.
I've always avoided Brooks Brothers since they are notoriously huge fitting. I actually walked in last week to try on a extra slim-fit and it fit really well. I bought one oxford and its going to be one of the few shirts I ever bought where I didn't have to get the sides taken in.
Other brands you might want to check out is Band of Outsiders (pricey), Gant (I prefer their Rugger series), and Rugby by Ralph Lauren. Most of these brands will have sport shirts. For the summer, I typically wear oxfords.
Theory makes some decent off-the-rack dress shirts that are tapered.
If you don't mind adjusting to the discomfort and looking ridiculous without your pants, shirt stays.
http://www.blank-label.com/
this is a site for custom dress shirts... they have a sale today... i havent ever ordered one but its a cool idea
Just be careful and guard yourself when you take the shirt stays off your feet
Charles tyrwhitt black label shirsts fit so much better than BB slim fits.
