Virtual Spring Week Dress Code
Hi guys, I’m a freshman and am going to a “spring week,” except it’s virtual and I was wondering what you think I should wear for this? Should I wear a shirt and tie or would you advise something else? I truly have no experience with this type of thing.

Wear a suit and tie on the first day just to be safe.
See what others do further into the week and adjust accordingly. I.e. if the majority of participants aren't wearing a tie then it'd probably be fine to take yours off.

I see this all the time with my SAs. The one who goes along with the crowd and loses the tie, loses my respect (let's face it, most won't wear a tie). The one still wearing the tie on the last day wins my respect.
It's a bit of a ridiculous way to lose respect for someone, especially if the office norm is to not wear a tie.
That said, I do agree that wearing a tie throughout an entire internship would be more likely to help you rather than hurt you. Unfortunately, I was one of those interns who would wear a tie everyday and then later on I found out my coworkers thought I was a twat for wearing it all of the time. Thus, adapting to the context is likely going to be the best play, provided you aren't assessing them haha.
Also this summer, the majority of those cringe LinkedIn posts from IB's for virtual internships had dressed down interns.
There's bad leaders, good leaders and excellent leaders. The excellent leaders are always going to be the most judging and demanding because they want to work with the best talent. You can't find the best talent if you don't have a discerning eye, right?
So you can choose to do what you want, but when you make your own way and show that you are not one to give into the crowd then the excellent leaders - the ones you want to work for - will find you.
I 100% agree that the best professionals aren't spineless people that give into the norm at the peril of their own values. As I said in my post, if most aren't wearing a tie, it would probably be fine to not wear one. In no way was I saying to not wear one, I was essentially saying it's up to them to decide.
Personally, wearing a tie, or not wearing a tie, during an internship has very little correlation to how good an intern may be. Dress sense in itself is a terrible measure for how someone performs. It can certainly show that they care, but I'd have more respect for an intern that dressed the way they deemed to be appropriate (and is appropriate) rather than a sycophant that dresses for the sole purpose of pleasing their MD by wearing, or not wearing, a tie.
Now you're walking back your own statements. Don't be a coward. Say what you mean and mean what you say.
Have you considered working in a different field?
