What jewelry is acceptable for a guy (soon hoping to intern on WS)?
My son is a first-year at a semi-target school. He is generally a preppy Fairfield Co kid but for some reason he likes to wear necklaces (like chains.) I am trying to shop for Christmas presents for him but don't want to buy him jewelry if it's something he shouldn't be wearing to an internship or job. (To me, it looks odd, but maybe it's what kids are wearing these days.)
Thanks, flame away, etc.
I don't know the Wall Street culture, but you can never go wrong with a watch. There are plenty of good options between $300-1,500 from Seiko, Hamilton, Tissot, etc. Like a Tissot PRX is a nice entry level watch, dressy enough for work, sports enough to be casual, and the integrated bracelet is the style these days.
Thanks so much - this is a great idea.
Wow we got moms out here knowing the tiers of schools for IB recruiting, never thought I’d see that lol
When you say chains, is he wearing big and obvious necklaces? Or something small?
I'm a former Morgan Stanley VP 😜
He has been alternating between a sterling crucifix & chain (under his shirt, except for at the gym) and a stainless Cuban link kind of chain (outside his shirts.) This is all new since college started.
I'm honestly not a fan of any of it, but if he wants to wear jewelry I might as well get him something more appropriate/tasteful.
I get it. Just tell the kid not to wear it in the office. Echo above re watches. I own a couple tissots (personal favorite is the Powermatic 80). This is the only jewelry I wear in the office. Outside of the office, I'll wear a cuban link chain or a cross, and I own a couple bracelets I like to alternate through. No one professionally ever sees that side of my fashion (i.e., I am not wearing that if I go out with colleagues but with college friends sure). It's an in-style look and goes really well with my wardrobe for my night life / social life. Just make sure he understands the difference of style for in versus out of office fashion / necessity to be more professional when around colleagues, even at social events.
Thanks - I think we're on the same page. No harm in getting him what he likes as long as he understands that there's a time and place.
I appreciate the Tissot recommendation - that looks like a lovely gift. I'm also considering a sterling 4mm box chain bracelet.
That's a great bracelet. Personally, I would recommend going with one of the watches mentioned on this forum (happy to give more recommendations). Reason why is, because if he is anything like me, I was very picky with my own chain / bracelets / wardrobe, but watches took my years to understand. Given your background I think he would appreciate the watch sentiment, and also I think a watch is just an awesome gift to get from parents. My first watch was from an SO, second from my Mom. Will never stop wearing the one from my mom. Just my 2 cents (although you picked a great bracelet).
