Which fragrance should I lock in for my analyst year?

Hey guys,

Starting FT IB in a few weeks and need to finalize my fragrance. Don’t want to smell like a Target body spray guy, but also not trying to come off like I’m flexing too hard.

Narrowed it down to a few options, would appreciate input:

Creed Aventus (500ml, $1,595) – the classic “finance bro” scent. Smells like deal flow + slightly burned Amex Black. Worried Creed Aventus ($1,595) is a little too obvious though.

Clive Christian No. 1 (50ml, $1,050) – read that this was once the world’s most expensive fragrance (currently only $1,050). Kind of like paying up for Goldman instead of Jefferies — worth it for the prestige?

Roja Haute Luxe (100ml, $3,500) – insane markup and I’ve never spent even 70% of $3,500 on a fragrance. On the other hand, if I wear a nice fragrance like Roja Haute Luxe ($3,500) then that will communicate status/trust.

Bond No. 9 Wall Street (100ml, $460) – lol kind of gimmicky but maybe so on-the-nose it works. Like wearing Patagonia vest ironically but not ironically.

I’ll only be wearing it at the office. Any other analysts/associates lock in something at this level? Did it make a difference in your trajectory? Thanks!

You want something that commands respect in the bullpen and the war room. I highly recommend

1. Shipmaster's Far North edition #4. 100ml for $1,400. This essence puts you in good company of history's best captains and frontiersmen who endured harsh waves in the arctic sea and commanded the ocean itself. Rumor has it they saved Fairbanks from starving during the great salmon migration of 1952 by using narwhal mating sounds to navigate to the best fishing areas

2. Barrow's Arctic Timber (50ml for $925) - the scent preferred by Alaskan hunters, this is rumored to have the same chemicals that polar bears use to navigate in cold storms. It's difficult to find, shipping to the lower 48 can take a while but it's worth the wait.

I would absolutely recommend Roja Haute Luxe - the price tag scares many people away, but it pays off in dividends through its elegant yet assertive presence in a variety of situations. It's one of my go-to fragrances, though I sometimes fear that it may be intimidating for those who can recognize its signature aura. As a scent, Bond No. 9 Wall Street is actually quite good value, but I found the atomizer on the custom bottle to be a bit coarse and might recommend replacing it with something nicer if you end up going with that.

Funniest

Are you a retard, why are you spending so much money on a fragrance? Also, is everyone else (apart from Spiderman) a retard in the comments? I suspect the answer to both questions are "yes".

I definitely recommend Creed Aventus. I wore this in my first year, and when an MD got a sniff of me, my career took off. He took me under his mentorship, and said 'son, you smell too good to be in the bullpen. I'll contact HR and ask them to promote you to Associate asap'. He then took me to all his client meetings.

I attended a client dinner and was seated next to a senior female client, who kept leaning closer to me all night, trying to get a sniff. She gave us 2 mandates that evening, and remarked how incredible I smelled!

Got to say, $1000 on fragrance is the best investment an analyst can make... ROI is off the charts!

I’m just one data point, but from the perspective of a woman, I always found Creed Aventus to be too “sweet” to be considered masculine.

Even le labo’s unisex scent smells more masculine than Creed Aventus to me. There are some scents from Creed that smell more masculine though, just not the pineapple one. But I don’t think dropping that much on a fragrance when you’re not swimming in cash is a wise decision when it makes a marginal difference at best.

This advice is trash. Go to a few fragrance/department stores, be nice to the salesperson and tell them that you want to buy something but would like to get a few samples. If they say no (they probably won’t if you are under 28 and look put together), then buy something like a candle / diffuser for your apartment that you like for you and ask for samples with it. Ask for samples based on what you tried / what you like and then wear it out a few times. Ask your friends, maybe a nice girl will tell you that you smell good. Then decide which to buy. If you go to a department store like Bergdorfs near CPS, the salespeople get paid on commission so try to buy it from the person that helped you out. In my experience, most saleswomen are much friendlier than salesmen.

Once you have  rotation of two (one for summer, one for winter), then you can buy it online on FragranceNet for much cheaper. Sometimes, the scents can be slightly different bc fragrancenet sells old batches. The scents still work but each batch can be slightly different etc.

Honestly, you can’t go wrong with any of these, but I’d say go for something that enhances your presence rather than screams for attention. Aventus is a classic for a reason — clean, confident, and professional — but yeah, a lot of people in finance already wear it.

If you want something refined but less “finance cliché,” consider Parfums de Marly Layton or Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540. Both have that polished, luxury vibe without being overexposed.

At the end of the day, no one’s judging your trajectory by your fragrance — they’ll just appreciate that you don’t smell like a gym locker or Axe. Subtle confidence > loud prestige.

I would go for something like Bois Imperial by Essential Parfums, not expensive at all as well. If you are looking for something more unique but still clean and office-friendly i can recommend Silver Musk by Nasomatto or Musc Eternel by Mizensir. Good luck for your finds! I have heard in the US wearing a lot of perfume is frowned upon, coming from Southern Europe it's different for us but I would speak to a salesperson and ask them exactly what you asked here. As well as that, fragrance is so personal, wear what you like as long as it's office-appropriate for wherever you are living (the salesperson can guide you on that) and you like it. Out of the list though I would 100% pick Aventus. Avoid Roja as their quality is no longer what it used to be.

You should definitely check out ARfragrances, they’ve got some really good quality dupes that last and smell amazing! Way better value than most clone sites I’ve tried

Lock in one versatile, office-safe signature and one evening upgrade. Day: Bleu de Chanel EDT or Prada L’Homme clean, professional, non-offensive. Night: Terre d’Hermès or Dior Homme Intense elegant, restrained. Stick to two sprays, chest + back of neck. Buy 5–10 ml decants first to test longevity.

Go to your local mall / Macy's and pickup the best smelling option. No one is doubling back to sniff you
