You Hodinkee Don't You?

Got into watches since last year, and Hodinkee turns out to be one of the best communities when it comes to watching talks. Currently, I have an Aqua Terra 8500, a JLC Reverso, and a 70s Wittnauer. Been thinking about getting an Explorer now, and hopefully I would be able to get one after next summer.

The Hondinkee special edition of the VC Cornes de Vache looks stunning. Love the dark grey aesthetic.

Kinda off the topic but it’s just stunning to see how Ben developed himself from an analyst at UBS to the face of the watch world, the man behind HODINKEE. Personally, I listen to every single HODINKEE radio on Spotify and wish I could have the imagination and courage to start my own side business (I collect vintage clothes and Native American jewels) someday.

Cheers!

I saw a guy on the train with what I assume was a 41mm Aqua Terra this weekend and I was just like F--- that's big. I'll just keep buying watches in the upper 30s like the 38mm Islander (microbrand) Tiffany blue I was wearing that day.

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.

36 can feel a little small at times depending on the watch.

Yea I'd stay with the classic sizes. I have a 6.5 wrist, and anything larger than 38 is too much. Up until now, I find my 33mm reverso to be the best fit on my wrist. (yes, I admit I am more on the feminine side when it comes to the overall style and stuff)

Some random thoughts. I have seen a lot of kids (incoming analysts) rocking the streetwear hype atm, think of Stone Island, Noah, Supreme, and stuff. But I'd always go with some stuff I can wear even in my late 20s. Things like watches, classic leather jackets, some nicer leather shoes, and quality sweaters. I'd buy a used Loro Piana piece instead of a stone island jacket on any day.

One of my favorites is the JLC Ultra Thin Moon. Also have one of the first edition aqua terras and a longines presence. I've avoided getting a Rolex as one of my few rebellious moves for the sake of being rebellious haha. I think they're beautiful pieces for avoidance of doubt, but I can't stand the process for getting one and how bulky they end up looking on most wrists. I also think there are so many other exciting watches out there aside from Rolex which are much more satisfying to wear. Not hating on Rolex at all but just see more value elsewhere. Also it's fair to say the majority of people who get them don't actually like watches but rather want to be associated with having a Rolex.

Also gotta give a shout to Teddy - his content is great.

Feel you. What year was the sub? I really like the older subs (90s) given they are much slimmer and look elegant as opposed to bulky like the newer subs.

And yeah I totally get it, I respect the total hell out of Rolex as a brand but again, I just think there is so much exciting potential outside of them in their price range. I'm sure that I'll end up getting one though lol.. I imagine it'll be spontaneous just like yours.

Also - if someone could please explain to me why Tudor is so revered in the watch community it would be much appreciated. I know they are sister companies with Rolex and have many similarities both inside and out. I've always seen Tudor's collection as the cheaper Rolex but still high quality no doubt. Just wondering why so many collectors decided they should add a Tudor piece to their collection - feel like for the 3K-6K range which is where they land on average - you could get something else like an Omega/Cartier etc (with some models obviously in the pre-owned arena). Interested to learn here

Tudor, these days, has really taken on its own personality / niche vs. just being Rolex's little brother. Watches like the Black Bay and Pelagos line are fine watches in their own right, and often there are design elements that are only available through Tudor like the Pelagos' all-titanium construction and clasp, the silver and bronze Black Bays, and weird experimental things like the P01. I have a DJ41 and a BB GMT, and aside from Rolex's 904L steel literally just feeling different (not necessarily better) than the 316L steel Tudor uses, I don't notice any particularly huge quality difference between the two.
