Expand job board

Dear,

I notice there are quit a lot of Dutch members on this forum (including me).
One of my little frustrations is that everything is focused on America. I understand this, because this is the financial centre of the world (wall street).

I think it might be a good idea to expand the scope of this site, by focussing more on the Benelux (Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg), since the investement banking industrie is growing here rapidly.

My first suggestion would be to expand the job board, so it will be possible to look for jobs in the benelux (focus on the Netherlands) as well.

What do you think about this?

I think it's a great suggestion...I forwarded this to our job board manager. Any specific banks / recruiting firms we shoudl target?

Thanks!
Patrick

Patrick, I am currently forming a list of what I think are nice firms to target in the first place. I focus on firms which offer internship possibilities. (fields: investment banking, corporate finance and consultancy). It's quit a lot of work, but I am looking for internships currently so I already got a lot of information.

When ready I will post it here. Whenever you need help / ideas just send me a message. I am really willing to help to make this succeed!

Because a lot of great reactions to my incentive (the board members as well) I decided to put up a plan for "how to expand in the Netherlands". It is just a first version, with some major ideas. Hope you all like it!

Plan: How to introduce Wall Street in the Netherlands. Wall Street Oasis is one of the best known website for finance, consultancy, investment banking, etc. As a Dutch student, I know what it’s currently like in the Netherlands. Lots of students want to prepare best as possible and are very motivated to pursue a good career. However, there are very little opportunities for students. First of all, there is no on-campus recruiting. Moreover, there are almost no conferences and universities don’t have alumni working in the top of consultancy / ib / finance. It is very hard for us to network. The industry is quite different from that in the US. Most firms only offer internships to students which are in the last stage of their studies / majors. Students really want to get internships, but don’t know how to prepare well for interviews etc. Dutch universities don’t have accurate information about this, especially not for the top firms. This all makes the Netherlands a great place to expand WSO. The products and guides, regarding interview preparation, technical questions, case studies and networking would really give students the information they are looking for. The networking guide / behavioral should be more related to the Dutch industry though (especially for the students looking to get an internship offer). The other guides are good for Dutch students as well, since most of them want to pursue an international career / career at an international top firm in the Netherlands. How to expand in the Netherlands? One of the greatest things to reach large amount of people is Facebook. All students I know do have Facebook. It would be great to promote the WSO facebookpage, maybe even to setup a Dutch version where we can post information regarding the Netherlands (for example about meeting, special Dutch related products, etc). Besides this, the board of WSO should contact the top firms in the Netherlands to setup a network. This way, we may be able to add these to the company board as well. Besides, they should try to find some workers (both experienced and beginners) who would like to write blogs / Q&A / Ask me anything articles on WSO. This could be also Dutch persons who are now working abroad, but started as Dutch students.

When this all went fine, and the popularity of WSO is growing steadily in the Netherlands, we should try to focus to increase this even more. This is where the campus-reps become important. Since most universities don’t have a campus, it is quite hard to promote WSO with only 1 prep on a university. This is why I would suggest: 2 reps per university (offering finance/ business related programs). Then it is the time to look for people within the industry, who would like to arrange meetings. Here students can actually network and find contacts / talk to people who already made it in the industry. From here on, it is just about keep looking for ways to improve the publicity of WSO. Perhaps some financial student associations want to promote WSO as well and are willing to help arrange meetings. So first, we need some persons (I hope the board will start with this) who are going to setup a network and try to expand our job board. I suppose it will cost pretty much time to arrange and actually perform this expansion. Therefore, it would be great if the board is able to find some (Dutch) industry profs who are willing to help them. Within a year, I think we can make WSO well-known in the Netherlands and increase the popularity. Besides, this will also results in more earnings for WSO (guides etc. / resume review / etc.).

Let me please know what you all think of this :)

I think Justin is on this and started reaching out to banks, but you can check in with him if you like.

While I appreciate your initiative, it's hard for us to just focus on the Dutch market...I think our job board could use more flow from a variety of financial hubs including The Netherlands, but also Singapore, Hong Kong, etc...

Thanks, Patrick
