WSO Finance Dictionary is Here
I wanted to take this time to announce one of the latest additions to our community: The WSO Finance Dictionary.
Believe it or not, one intern from the UK has built this entire dictionary from scratch. He has been working on all these terms (~400) over the last few months and has done an incredibly thorough job defining some of the most basic finance terms (and more complex ones) to help some of our new chimps find their way. While not all definitions are perfect and some may even have some errors, it was a hurculean task that should help WSO on a variety of levels:
1) You will notice now when you are reading in the forums or blogs, if a certain acronym or financial term comes up, it is likely linked to the definition. If you don't know what something means, it's a click away. Don't worry, no annoying pop-ups if you mouse over them.
2) Search Engine Optimization. As some of you may know, the majority of our traffic comes from Google, so having strong content and SEO helps us continue to grow our search traffic. If we can start ranking on the first page for some of these keywords / definitions, that should only help continue the strong growth of the community.
If any of you have corrections / edits or suggestions on new additions to the WSO Finance Dictionary, please include them here and we will do our best to fix any errors as quickly as possible. We plan to continue to add to this Dictionary over the years to make it massive, but thought we'd announce it now since it's up to 400 terms.
Thanks Sam,
Patrick
mad props to the geezer
Great effort! Very well constructed.
Nice addition. I'd throw you not 1 but 2 SBs - if I had any. It should divert some traffic from sites like Investopedia.
I'll throw you my last SB. Great work!
Quite comprehensive! I'm glad to see more resources here on the site. I think you owe that intern a bonus!
NOL & Loss Carry Forward
Good call, will get these added
MACRS
I'd give you an SB, but that just seems wrong :-p
keep the suggestions coming guys
I suggest you re-word some of the triggers in the dictionary. For example, if I type the term Managing Director it won't produce a link because the dictionary has the term labeled as Managing Director (MD).
hey Comp, for basic terms we actually haven't added keyword links...so we can set it to link to MD or Managing Director, or both -- we are just adding the keywords slowly (and the more useful / less known definitions) at first.
not sure if we need to link "MD" and "Managing Director", but will think about it....we just don't want every other word linked in a thread so we have to be careful of taking it too far.
Thanks

This truly is an amazing resource. I have taken the time to confirm that the definitions are indeed original and the interface is a lot 'cleaner' than investopedia. Some of the definitions are actually quite detailed (ex: Hedge Funds) which is just awesome.
Crack-spread, Limit up, limit down and lock limit. Thanks Macro - I'm sure Sam will be happy to hear his hard work is appreciated...
Keep the suggestions coming. He is busy this week but then he will have until February to keep it growing.
I told him it would be helpful to get more specific on typical covenants you find in loan docs -- a useful skill for PE associates doing LBOs....so he will also be focusing on that and adding more keyword links so that more terms are auto linked to the definitions.

Can this be available as a PDF as well for WSO members? I understand it will updated every now and then, but regardless I think a PDF would allow members (especially students) to really benefit from this as a faster reference source.
FYI, now added under the FAQ menu so you can jump to it quickly.
Enterprise Value (EV) - broken link (Works just fine when going through the link through "equity value"-page)
