Abdiel Recruiting: Am I just wasting time?
Currently a sophomore at an HYPSM. I'd say I'm an average student. Like a month ago I applied for Abdiel's internship program and I got past some rounds, but from what I've seen on the forum there are like eight rounds. Am I just wasting my time? Would appreciate if people who have gotten the internship/others applying could weight in.
Em...how exactly are you wasting your time?
On a serious note, know a prior intern who loved their experience at Abdiel and credits it for opening up some great opportunities down the road.
I meant wasting time as in dedicating tons of effort to the recruiting process and then failing to get the position. Like I said I'm an average student, and it seems like they look for some special people.
They might be special people, but they generate below-average return. So you are right where you belong.
they have this boneheaded idea of holding to perpetuity. Lost so much money in conviction to this idea on Cricut. While some might respect their “intellectual principles”, that’s other people’s money…
Become an above average candidate by studying the public markets more in your free time. If you put in effort to learn it's usually not a waste
When did you hear back from the cover letter submission?
I went through a few rounds of their process a while back (resume, short answer/cover letter, stock pitch, and one live interview). Got crushed in the first interview and obviously didn't get very far but definitely felt like it was a useful experience
Also at HYPSM, I got cut at the last round last year. Had also previously worked at a Tiger Cub. Now working at a good HF, tbh the Abdiel process made future recruiting really easy. Took many months to get through and tough that I didn't get it but I definitely learned a ton. Sharp people, intellectually honest.
abdiel and intellectually honest? Name a less iconic duo
.
how did you get the chance to do tiger cub internships and find a way to a hf out of ug?
Networking. You need to realize that money management is a very lean business. There are simply not enough seats to support all the smart people who want one. So once you're "baseline smart", which if you go to a HYPSM school you are, it comes down to networking. Also I would recommend checking out the pods, I'm probably going to join one because most of the "elite" tiger cub hedge funds are horrible places to work right now. Analysts are leaving etc. Once a fund is underwater, the fund economics make it so that junior pay is kinda garbage relatively speaking. Or may just exit this industry...go to Silicon Valley...finance brain drain is real, all my smartest friends are in tech
Any advice on how to go about doin that? What funds would reasonably take interns that I could cold email? Been trying to land something like that for a while
did anyone hear back after the case study rd?
