AllianceBernstein Buyside Research vs BB IB for HF and MBA potential
Thank you to those who chime in! Similar topics have been discussed before but I am curious to see opinions in recent months/2023. IB is BofA, and AB is their buy-side equity research program.
Buyside as in their asset management arm? Probably IB then since mediocre mutual funds won’t translate to HFs well. Sellside ER is the best since those kids sit on the other side of calls between us and the analysts, take calls with lower tier clients, and just generally get into the flow. IB is imperfect but plenty of teams will hire some banker who can model and give them time to learn the trade
Interesting, I appreciate the insight!
Why all the MS out of curiosity?
Undergrads really overrate the attractiveness of a mediocre buyside seat vs a standard sellside seat, and are probably conflating Bernstein sellside ER quality with AB mutual funds. Active mutual funds are a dying industry so if you go down that path especially as a junior you need to join one of the big players, which AB is not.
If AB promotes their associates to analysts directly, then I’d take that over BAML IB.
Thank you! To my best knowledge, AB does direct promotes. Also, does this mean you would be more interested in interviewing an AB applicant over a BAML IB applicant at your fund?
No, it means you should try to get promoted to Analyst there because AB has a good reputation and is likely a solid place to build a career.
