Am I on a realistic path to land in MO at a HF/MM?
Background: 22-25 YO at a multinational ags phys trading company (think ABCD). Degree in economics from well respected STEM state school. Know some python and R through coursework, undergrad research, and some projects at work I decided to take on (would rate myself 6/10 in python). Current desk is one of the largest asset backed trading positions in the company and don’t want to get too specific to prevent doxing myself. I get a lot of exposure on how we manage our basis and spread positions, and have got the ability to put some risk on and manage it myself.
Though cliché, when I say I want to be a “lifelong learner”, I mean it. I’ve read Natenbergs “Option Volatility and Pricing” nearly front to back with detailed notes for my own learning. I’d say I have quite a strong understanding of option pricing and the risk measurements compared to others my age in phys trading. I am currently self-studying discrete math and linear algebra to further distinguish my skillset, and because I actually enjoy learning math. And I will keep going because I love it.
Why do I want to leave phys trading? I wouldn’t say my heart is set on it, but there are parts I could do without. Mostly, I don’t care much for logistics. It doesn’t get me fired up to talk about plant safety, lock delays, or location hours for dumping. I like markets, finance, and risk management.
All that being said…
I have little desire to be the rockstar PM raking in 7 figs like most young bucks browsing the HF section on WSO. I do care about my career and money, though. I’d feel deep satisfaction with a decent WLB and the ability to make $200-350k/yr within a few years.
1. Are my goals realistic? (Are there actually jobs out there with this type of comp and decent WLB)?
2. Is a role in the middle-office / risk management department a place I could make this happen?
3. Given my background, could I be a competitive candidate? What do you reccomend I do to sharpen my skillset or bolster my resume?
Any advice is appreciated. Cheers.
