AN1 Comp negotiation

Hello,

I will be sitting with HR next week for a post underground comp negotiation at a well-known fund (SVP, TPG, King Street, Oaktree) and I wanted to know what salary to expect/negotiate. They don’t usually hire graduates so they don’t have a standarized process and I don’t know anyone who is at a similar role.

What kind of base, bonus, and signing bonus is acceptable especially for hfs that have PE vehicules. This is for a London position, Special situation group.

Cheers

For a graduate-level role in a Special Situations Group (SSG) at a well-known fund in London, here's what you can expect or negotiate based on the most helpful WSO content:

Base Salary

  • Entry-level base salaries in similar roles typically range from £65,000 to £80,000.
  • Some firms may offer slightly higher bases, especially if they are known for competitive compensation.

Bonus

  • Bonuses in these roles are highly discretionary but can range from 25% to 50% of the base salary.
  • Exceptional performance or strong fund performance could push this higher, but this is a reasonable range to expect.

Signing Bonus

  • Signing bonuses for similar positions in London are often around £6,000 to £10,000.
  • Some firms may also cover relocation costs, such as one month of hotel accommodation to help you settle in.

Negotiation Tips

  1. Highlight the lack of a standardized process: Since they don’t usually hire graduates, you can position yourself as a unique hire and negotiate for a competitive package.
  2. Ask for clarity on bonus structure: Try to get a sense of whether bonuses are tied to individual performance, team performance, or fund performance.
  3. Consider non-monetary perks: If the base or bonus is non-negotiable, inquire about other benefits like training opportunities, relocation support, or additional perks.

Additional Notes

  • Funds with PE vehicles may have slightly different compensation structures, but the ranges above should still apply.
  • If you’re unsure, aim for the higher end of the range, especially if you’re confident in your skills and fit for the role.

Good luck with your negotiation!

Started on buyside out of school too, albeit not a shop like that. If you already have the offer, ask for 150 base at least. They’ll probably pay you less, but aim high and know your worth.
