Automation for long short equity

Curious about the degree of automation at various L/S pods. Interested to see if there’s more that can be done.

Ideally building a software to automate the long short research process. Would love some input from the WSO community!

There are mechanical aspects of the analyst's job that most people hate doing:

  • Adjusting for business days in a quarter, number of weekends for retail, etc.
  • Using seasonality to forecast - or the inverse, using guidance/consensus to back out what's implied for the q and compare it to historical seasonality
  • Looking at whether the 2y and 3y stacks are accelerating/decelerating
  • Looking at whether mgmt guide has historically been conservative/aggressive
  • Emails/calls to IR digging for "color" and to sell-side on "positioning" - should have a robot do this
  • Summarizing earnings calls, expert calls, any datapts etc. and predict what reaction will be (use LLMs or sth)
  • Looking at short interest relative to historical ranges
  • Looking at valuation multiples relative to historical ranges
  • This list is not exhaustive...

With that list of automations, it should be able to auto-populate a good chunk of your earnings previews and earnings recaps. Of course the human analyst will have to review, spot check, and add more higher-level insights.

Have released several Micro SaaS startups related to automation under the HF/PE sphere - would appreciate scheduling a brief call to discuss perspectives on this.
