Best Coding Courses for Analysts
Does anyone here know of a comprehensive python (or other language) course for equity analysts. I have some very basic coding experience and am looking for a course catered towards data analytics from the perspective of buy side research. Is there a specific course that the pod shops recommend or one that someone on this site has completed?
If you do have one in mind, how much of an edge did you get from it? Was it greater efficiency? Better idea generation? Easier to track key indicators?
Any ideas or feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Would focus on developing very robust modelling skills and coming up with actionable pitches for MMs ngl. Coding really isn't a requirement, if its meaningfully needed for workflow that goes beyond excel, your central alt data team or a data analyst in your pod would be building it out.
Thanks for colour. I’m actually already on the buy side at a non MM fund. We don’t have an external data team which is why I am after a course that could help teach me some the key value add applications.
Apologies, misread the intent of your post. Can't advise on good sources. Good luck!
I have helped several fundamental guys learn programming and here's what I think you should learn to be a value add:
1. Learn how to create databases. If you are going to save down data that you think is important to investment research you will need to design tables and columns to store it. For example, you may have one table for companies, another for stock prices, another for credit card transactions, and you can join them.

2. Learn how to write python scripts to save the data to your new database. This is the hardest part but it can save you a ton of time if you can make something overnight to pull bloomberg data, alt data, etc. automatically and have it at your fingertips the next morning.
3. Learn how to write SQL queries to your new databases to get the information you want. For example, maybe you want to get the company names and stock prices where EBITDA has gone down. Then you write a query and paste the results in your excel and do what you need, super easy.

Personally a big fan of DataCamp. It’s a bit like codeacademy but with a focus on using programming to handle data, so you’ll often find quite a stat/data focus on the material. Also they have a bunch of courses on finance content so should have all you’ll need for most financial data.
Thanks!
I am currently an investment data scientist at a large HF, with previous quant experience. Currently spending time trying to learn more about the fundamental process and how to structure thesis, etc.
Would you be interested in helping eachother: i.e. I can assist with your data science learning journey, and vice versa?
Interested. Could you DM me
interested too, background in macro quant with a stint in equities
Interested as well if you wanna DM me
