Birch Grove / Third Point

Anyone have any colour/context on the tie up here? Not sure if Third Point has been struggling or what but I feel like it used to have a very hallowed reputation among the single manager equity hedge fund space with like Pershing Square, Greenlight etc. Don’t quite understand the decision to acquire a small-ish CLO manager. Would be interesting to know if comp has gotten an uplift for the Birch Grove folks from CLO to equity HF comp culture.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, there isn't specific information directly addressing the tie-up between Birch Grove and Third Point or the motivations behind it. However, Third Point has historically been recognized as a prominent single-manager equity hedge fund, often compared to names like Pershing Square and Greenlight. The decision to acquire a smaller CLO manager like Birch Grove could indicate a strategic diversification into credit or CLOs, which aligns with broader trends in the hedge fund space where firms expand into different asset classes to capture alpha or stabilize returns.

Regarding compensation, transitioning from a CLO-focused platform to an equity hedge fund culture could potentially lead to an uplift in comp, especially if the new role involves higher risk-adjusted returns or a more performance-driven structure typical of equity hedge funds. However, specific details about comp changes for Birch Grove employees post-acquisition are not available in the dataset.

Dan would’ve been like every other 1-man shop. Key man risk / inability to create continuity or enterprise value. Eventually closes or converts to FO.  This is building an asset manager, presumably that can outlast him and get a liquidity event (buyout from other personnel over time, I’d guess, but who knows?). Yeah HF has changed a lot and they’ve had ups/downs, esp in public equities. CLO and PC are much better businesses in terms of aum, revenue stability vs a SM HF. He’s done this stuff before w insurance etc. fwiw. Not really worried about Dan either way

Re: culture / comp. Maybe can attract better talent at the margins in CLO, given brand/growth opp. But comp structure not changing to HF. They have credit HF guys btw - different teams although I’d guess they talk.
