Canyon Capital

Hi Guys,

I have a 2nd round call with Canyon Capital. Trying to do all the due diligance about the company before going into the call. Not really much out there. I understand the fund is about 25bn, with 8 bn in their real-estate wing, and the oher 17bn allocated to proprietary investing. I understand they have large positioning in the RMBS market. Does anyone have experience working there and can share a bit about culture, work-life, day-to-day, etc.

Currently working for a BB in a fixed-income structuring role looking to make move to buy-side. Still debating between moving into one of their business development vs risk roles. If anyone could weigh in that be great. My knowledge of corp organization for hedge funds is still a bit hazy.

Thanks,
VandyMan

Firstly, what the hell do you mean by "proprietary investing"? it's a fucking hedge fund duuuuude. Secondly, they're pretty sick. Thirdly, what the job you're in line for, sound pretty middle officey to me (judging from biz dev / risk role comment)?

Business development/risk definitely sounds like middle-office unless you're part the sourcing team (biz dev). Getting into an investing role there would be great - well respected fund out in LA.

I'll tell you this. Their office in LA is sick and they're in the same building with some talent agencies and stuff so the girlie situation is off the chain. And I'm not making a joke here, this is a serious consideration. There are hot girls everywhere in that building.

Their building also has one of the coolest parking garages i've seen

I've worked with their guys on several projects. Culture seems relatively laid back - some of their managers/partners I heard are avid surfers. They make some interesting investments (primarily senior secured, preferred equity type stuff in a lot of non-core markets). They also have some interesting partnerships with Magic and Agassi.
