DE Shaw Prospective Intern Summer Event

Last week I received an email from DE Shaw inviting me to their "Coast to Coast Celebration" where it's a two hour party/networking event in NYC and SF for prospective interns to meet employees and get to know the firm. I was very suprised to recieve this email, considering I've never directly contacted DE Shaw before. I also do not attend a "quant hedge target school," being a student at Cornell. Does anyone know how these kind of firms find students to invite, and if the event is legitimate? I live a few hours away from NYC and am not sure if the trip is worth it. Thanks!
