But what role at the hedge fund? If you want to be a research analyst / investor / portfolio manager, then do IB... if you want to be a buyside equity or credit trader, do S&T
Hedge funds typically have diverse strategies and multiple front office roles across things like equity, credit, traders, structured credit, real estate, emerging markets. It's important to do a role/group that feeds into the role you want to be in. For example, if you want to be a credit/distressed hedge fund investor, starting at JPM leveraged finance IB or Evercore Restructuring is a great start that'll open many doors. If you want to be a equity hedge fund guy, an IPO heavy group / prestigious IB team is the way to go.
I want to trade rates/currencies/bonds. The traditional way was prop trading but that is dead now so what is the best next thing
