Equity Derivatives S&T to HF

Alright guys, the title says it all. I'm looking to transition into an investment or research analyst role at a HF.

In addition to my background in the vol space, I have taken heavy coursework and have a strong understanding of fundamental analysis for a non-investment banker (I've built accretion/dilution models, LBOs w/ debt schedules, valued implied synergies on a public transaction, etc.).

Personally, I feel that S&T lacks the same level of idea generation and autonomy that you might find at a HF. How do I start my search? Am I limited to just the vol space, or does my coursework open the door a bit? I was going to start by contacting alumni in the field, but any insight would be appreciated. Happy holidays and thanks!
